Our sales tax is a little over 8% here, so I always double the tip, and I actually add more because it just doesn't seem like that much. So I probably tip 20% on a regular basis. I don't think that it's all that hard to give up that extra dollar or two to make sure that you tip enough. Seriously folks, unless the service was bad, these people deserve it. Almost no one likes working in the service bis, that's punishment enough without having to deal with lousy tippers.

Here is how to figure out 15%. You take the amount of the bill and move the numbers over one place. This is ten percent. Then take this number and divide it in half, and add that to the first number (10%) and you have 15%.
For example:
Bill= $23.92
10% 2.39
5% 1.20 (I rounded up, you should too)
15%= 3.59.
See, its easy. We remember bad tippers, and the next time you come in, you will end up with a spit sandwich.

I used to be a server but I got out of it because it's just too much aggrevation. Most of the people i remember were just too lazy to give a 15% tip.

In ontario it's easy to figure out the tip. Just ad the 2 taxes together...GST and PST and you get 15 %. Anyhoo, my standard tip is always 15%. Sometimes, if my service is really bad I'll tip a little less, and frankly if it's crap, they don't get anything, and I won't go back so I'm not worried about a spit andwhich.

I start at 20% and work my way upward or downward, but never go below 15% unless service has been sh*tty.
You're right OP... ya don't need a tip calculator or a little card to figger out a tip. My rule of thumb is round off the bill to the nearest dollar, take 10% off that, double the 10% to get 20% or add half of that for 15%. And then I'll round up the odd cents to the nearest dollar.

is Indiana a poor state?
because if it is, i'll let this slide...
last night, i start my afternoon shift by seeing a retired couple from virginia pull up to the hotel. I waited about 20 minutes for these ppl to check-in and use the washroom...as i load all his shit on the dolley, he's transferring things to the trunk of the car, stating, "I don't think this valet key opens the trunk"
*because i have a lot of use for old man hats*
...so i go up to his room, unload his stuff and he gives me a loonie; one measle canadian dollar, pathetic. Standard for this act of service, whihc we've coined 'fronts', is $5. For most americans, it would be 5 or 10 american dollars (because they're at the to of the tipping hierarchy. The other bellmen comes over "Nick, hopping on the floor and snagging the american fronts, what'd you get for that, 10 american?"
Damn i wish we had more bus tours, the last few days this is the only type of clientele we've had.

I REALLY hope this isn't true.
Not to start a war, but those of us who work in the hospitality industry work hard to dispel this rumor and fight this behavior. Spitting into food/snot rockets or ANYTHING like this is grounds for immediate dismissal from a kitchen position. It is both HIGHLY unsanitary and grounds for lawsuits up the ass.
If you are ever tempted to behave in this manner and you work around food, DON'T DO IT! Would you want this to happen to you???
I could talk about this for hours because my friends are reluctant to ever send food back or complain because they are afraid of this. PLEASE DO NOT PERPETUATE THIS MYTH BY ACTUALLY DOING IT!

One more comment: tips are earned, not automatic. It's a suck-ass profession that you go into if you need a job, yes, but you should also love people. You can't tell me you've never, EVER been on the receiving end of both stellar and/or crap-ass service before you become a server, so emulate the behavior you loved!
The hospitality field is rough. You have to leave all your emotional baggage at the door when you come to work. You have a fight with your SO, can't pay a bill, etc, you leave it at the door. It's an industry that is all about making others happy; it's customer driven and service-oriented.
Also, as a customer, you have a small role to play. Basically, don't be an ass! I am VERY cordial to my server b/c I've been in the trenches...If your meal isn't up to snuff, it's not the server's fault. Managers are there to take complaints, don't abuse your server!
And if you don't want to tip, stay home! Tip generously if they deserve it.
