I just feel really grown when I go to the spa.

When I was little I use to watch all of the movies of the week and they would always have fancy folks in robes and stuff going to the spa. Thing is, the staff is not all that fine and you can find them a dime a dozen.

BUT, it's all good and I AM GROWN

I searched for this thread just so I could put this in here:

MOVING INTO MY OWN APARTMENT, BEING A GRAD SCHOOL STUDENT, AND DOING SOMETHING THAT'S RIGHT FOR ME EVEN IF MY PARENTS DON'T AGREE.

Whew. I held that in for too long!

Writing checks makes me feel grown. When I was a child, I thought it was a really grown up thing to do. It seems more grown to me than using a credit card. I knew folks in high school with those, but only our parents had checkbooks.

It also feels grown to have a house, be married, and be living in a state where none of my family lives. It feels grown to be expected to bring food to family events. Kids just get to show up.

One of my 7th graders asked me "[Meez Discreet], you listen to that old school music like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, huh?"

Going into the refrigerator (my OWN refrigerator!) without asking for permission. To this day I still have to remind myself that I'M GROWN .

When my brothers look at my childhood pictures and say, "Ya'll used to wear your hair like that????!!!" or "Ya'll used to wear that? And it was acceptable????!!!!!" LOL

LOL! Yep. I have two brothers and the middle one is 11 years younger than me. The other one is 12 years younger than me. I guess my momma was like, "Oooh. I need to catch up!"

1. Establishing a firm time to leave the club or party because I need X numbers of hours of sleep to be fully functional.

2. Addressing my college students as "Young Man/Woman"

3. Gossiping with my momma, grandmothers and aunties. I can remember when I was a pre-teen trying to listen to grown folks conversation by being quiet so they wouldn't notice they were talk siht about Mrs. Turner's bad a$$ kids

4. Telling the neighbor's kids to stay off my patio and away from my plants. Ok, it's more like yelling like my momma used to do.

5. Planning the days I can imbibe (and recover).

Not feeling like going to school and not having to fake a hoarse voice or a fever.

Paying credit card bills

Knowing that, although I don't have to be, I am independent

When I was little, I knew when my mother got paid. I'd ask for money, she'd say no and say that she didn't have any money. I'd say "but you just got paid!" Mama, I so understand the meaning of that now

The fact that I have a budget makes me feel grown. In school, I would just buy that new outfit without thinking twice, now I have to look in my checkbook to make sure I can afford that outfit. Paying my rent is more important than new clothes anyday...

Other stuff:
My 9 to 5 job
My business cards
When I go home to visit and stay out a little late, my folks don't question me.
I don't have homework anymore, I can watch all the tv I want cuz I don't have to study.

To all the college students who can't wait to graduate: being grown is very OVERRATED, I do miss school sometimes.

How about becoming a role model for the people you considered role models when you were coming up? I just got my car title from the finance company in the mail on Monday and I still can't believe it!

I'm 30, but my dad was the first person I called -- after calling Bank One to make sure they hadn't made a mistake. He sounded so proud, and I hope he's inspired to knock his note down too.

(Don't nobody tell my cousin, tho -- he'll have his hand out in a heartbeat!)

Here's another one:

Last Thursday was Take Your Daugther/Son to Work at my job. I brought my daughter to work and volunteered as a group leader. There were some instances whereas the children in my group tried to "cut up". I kindly told them "I know your parents, so you better behave or else I will let them know how you were!" The expressions on those kids' faces were priceless, b/c they didn't know that I was an employee, they thought I just came along to volunteer.
