Ya gotta be careful on some of these programs that claim they'll stop pop-ups and other spyware, unless you know it's from a source you can trust.
Ad-aware (now in a version 6.0 - the Plus version is even more powerful and worth the price of a download) is highly recommended; so is Spybot Search and Destroy. Make sure you keep these programs up to date, because the bastards keep coming up with new and ingenious ways to trash your computer with ads.
As for spam splattering your e-mail box -- McAfee's SpamKiller's OK but like many spam-busting programs, it is a little too aggressive in intercepting spam, until you have built up a 'friends' list that filters out the wheat from the chaff. The sound alerts are lame -- a bullet ricochet if it detects spam, a barking dog if it encounters unknown mail, and a windchime if it's legitimate mail -- and I gotta get under the hood of that program to change the damned things -- they can get annoying!
