I dunno, I'm not sure what the deal is. But at my school they still do. We don't have brother/sister fraternities/sororities... so the fraternities pick certain girls that they like and want to hang out alot (or somthing). They do it a lot more organized than, say, Delta Chi does at my school.
DC picks any girl... I think the new guys big brother gets to pick a girl and they are ALL considered sweethearts. But in Lambda chi, the girl has to be in a sorority, and has to have hung out for at least a year or somthing... and out of the Crescent sisters, ONE is picked sweetheart.
They might not still do it at other places... but maybe since they've done it forever, and all the other fraternities have lil sisters, they;re just going to continue doing it.
I really dont know.
