Ok, somone struck a nerve. I am thinking your either A. a local and have no prominent alumni, or B. an Alpha Beta or Tri-Lamb with no prominent alumni.

Sorry, this isn't right either.
As a member of Sigma Pi fraternity, we have plenty of prominent alums. I simply find it much more important to tell prospective new members that we were the 2002 Grand Sage Award winners (top chapter in the country), or that we had last year's Greek Man of the Year, or that we out-rush and out-party every other GLO on campus. To me, those accolades speak for themselves.
I don't think many people care too much that some distant, far-off figurehead once wore my letters.
If I did care, or if people at my school were superficial enough to care about stuff like that, then yeah, I would tell them all about our famous alums. You think I'm bluffing? PM me and I will give you a list of prominent Sigma Pi's. As for this forum, and Greek Life in general, I think things like that are useless and have little bearing on the success and future of our organizations.

GreekSCU-"Don't even tell me you haven't met a Sigma Chi who brags about having John Wayne as an alum."
Oh how funny! You got that right. That's one of those little "facts" that we ALL heard about and that was in the 70's!
God love Jphn Wayne, but I'm glad they have "Brad" now!
Honestly, I don't ever recall the Sigs using John Wayne as a selling point, it was one of those "neat" facts that helped break the ice and get conversation rolling.

Really, now... that was a rather immature comment. There is no need to be rude over such a petty topic.

Ok, cool down! Why don't we just let this one die? We've already pointed Mr. Betarulz to the relevant Baird and Heller threads. That's all he was looking for. Please, boys, take your interfraternity pissing contests somewhere else. You're not doing anything to impress the ladies.

This is an interesting topic and there really is no perfect answer, however most of us can agree that that certain fraternities are probably near the top in certain areas of the country and that certain fraternties are among the leading national groups.
For example can anyone really deny that SAE and KA are strong in the South, I used to live in Tuscaloosa Alabama and the E's were all dominant at UA and Auburn. My wife went to Vanderbilt and KA and SAE were strong there as well. The Miami triad is very strong in the midwest while many old line fraternities,IE- DKE, CHI PSI and ADPHI remain strongest in the NorthEast.
On a national leve most peple would agree that Beta, PhiDelt ,Fiji, SAE and Sigma Chi have a fairly high proportion of stronger chapters. Of course every campus is different but these national and international groups have avoided the pitfalls of overselectivity which have hurt the small old line fraternities while not expanding too fast like TKE or SPE.

I'll say it again. Your organizaton ought to be number one in your hearts. Don't worry about what anyone else thinks.
