At my university, all fraternities and sororities has a house, but in order to keep things as fair as possible for rush, we have formal recruitment in a seperate building with multiple rooms for all of us to be in! I enjoy this since I beleive that some rushees may judge a partilcular sorority by how nice or rich looking their house is!

But doesn't it sorta make sense to judge the house also? Don't get me wrong, I don't think it should be your best reason for choosing one sorority or another (as a matter of fact, I think it should be a very tiny factor to consider) but you are going to be living there. Just something I was wondering.

My 2 centts, At PSU Kansas all Greek orgs. have houses. William-Jewell, all of the Fraternitys have new multi-million $ houses but the Soros live in dorms and each has a seperate area.
C Mo U has a Octo-plex where the Frat.s live with a comon kitchen facility! It is nutty and when I ran into one of the guys they were trying to build a housing fund to get own house! I was not in it but drove by it god what a mess!!!!
U Mo KC has a house but becaus of U rules they can hve only 4 men per address. They are in an old house and have two intrances with two address'.
PSU wanted to build a Greek Row but under their thumb! Is stupid since most of us are on Broadway across from the school! Probably is why they want us hidden!
Runs S0, t0 No AGD, LXA, ASA, SX, Pike, and across the street from the LXA house the SPE. Only 2 are not along that strech of road!
It is different all over but to call the Soroity House Whore Houses is LUDICRISE and DAMN DUMB!!!!!! Typical Govt. BS!!!!!!

If you are living with a bunch of girls you feel uncomfortable with, it doesn't matter if you are living in the Taj Mahal. The main things you should judge are whether it is clean and safe.

I definitely don't agree with someone picking one group of girls over another just because they have a nice house. But it probably would be helpful to see if the house is clean, and to observe if the sisters respect the place they live. Even if you love the girls, it might be hard to live in a pig stye.

First, to clear up the Tennessee law thing, apparently it's like if a certain number of women live together in a house (say 25 girls or something), then the house is considered a brothel. I think SC has the same law, but we have sorority houses, and USC is in the process of building a Greek Village.
Second, Tinkerbell, don't fret too much about who your roommate will be. You or she can always move out. I lived with a dirty hippie who didn't shower, didn't flush, wore patchouli oil, and never did laundry. One day I walked in and she was snorting coke!!! She was gone by the end of the semester.
As far as rush goes, only the first round of parties is held in the sorority houses. The rest of the week, the parties are held in the conference center on campus. Our houses are old and the rooms are small. It would be very difficult to get all 120 sisters and rushees in one room!

We also dont have houses at my school, so our parties were at different places like student center on different floors, and our pref party was in the banquet room. It all actually turned out very well. And if you were on a different floor, then after pledging if you wanted to move you could as long as there was room!!

My school doesn't have houses either. Since we live in the city (Boston) it is difficult and expensive! I know up until the early 1970's my sosority had a house, but we no longer do.
There is supposed to be a "brothel law" in MA, but I don't know if it is re-enforced.
But some sisters or brothers all live in what is known as a "suite" which is 4-6 dorm rooms with a common room connecting them all or some will all going in on an apartment and that will be known as the "house"
Either way, it doesn't effect greek life at our school much.
