I'm really surprised to hear that UF does recruitment that way. I thought it was like UCF. We base our numbers on the amount of girls that go through. We had over a thousand on the first day and we were all nervous because that would mean we would have a pledge class of over 100 girls!!! (we only have 9 sororities and one more this fall) But, as the week goes on, girls drop out of rush for different reasons. We then base our quota on how many girls attend preferentials. UCF ends up with a very high quota (71 was the quota last year!) but it's good because everyone will get a bid somewhere.

I am also SOOOOO excited about rush! I know I'm going to be crushed if I don't get in but I'm sure that things will work out for the best. I love reading about other girls being all pumped up about rushing because then I don't feel so silly! None of my friends understand why I want to Greek, so it's nice to know that others are out there feelin the same as me!

Hey everyone!
I'm going through rush at UF too!! I'm going to be a sophmore and am really nervous! There are TONS of sophmores rushing this year (practically every girl on my floor last year), and I know they have quotas and limited spots. That's why I'm going all out to get recs, pictures and everything taken care of. I will be really crushed if I don't get a bid. Mostly I'm posting this in hopes of a little encouragement. I've been searching around for information about recruitment, and things are sounding more and more grim. Ugh.
So, if anyone wants to get in touch with me, I'd be thrilled the hear from you. Especially if you're greek at UF. I'll post back and tell everyone how things go. 18 more days!!

Good luck to everyone rushing this fall - I'm sure you guys will find the right home And don't be crushed if you don't get a bid - if that happens (heaven forbid), either rush again or form your own local sorority. Just don't give up.
ZTAngel ~ your quota was 71??? Chapter total on my campus was 80!! And I thought the chapters that were at total were too big!!

YEah 18 more days and i'll be living in the sorority house. 20 more days and work week begins for rush. I am so excited about rush!!! I wish some of you girls were attending the Univeristy of Northern Colorado!!! To all the girls rushing- Go for it- you will enjoy it- take it from me a shy girl who never thought she would get into a house!!! One of my top 2 choices chose me!!! Of course rejection sucks but be positive!!!
Envision yourself in a sorority- they say athletes often prepare by mentally picturing themselves winning, catching the ball etc. DO this with your rush- Picture yourself surrounded by a bunch of girls, bundles of engery, going into houses where girls are learning all about you etc

Oh my gosh.....Just 17 more days until rush begins. I am even more excited than I was when I started this thread!! That is because I've been on campus now for 5 weeks doing summerB class, and I've met some really nice women from sororities. The only reason I knew they were in sororties was because they had their letters on, but they are so smart! (one of them is in my politics class) Anyway, getting to know some of the greeks on campus has made me even more excited then when I filled out my application. I also was able to get recs to Kappa Kappa Gamma, Chi Omega, Tri-Delta, and Phi Mu. Alright, I just wanted to keep you guys updated.......talk to ya later

I went to UF and was in a sorority that is no longer on campus (see my post in Greek Life under "Sororities at UF")
Anyway, regarding the discrepancy between the # of rushees and the # of bids given out, the reason is that quota is set the night before prefs (the last round).
1400 rushees might start at the beginning, but A LOT drop out. Some get tired of going to rush parties all day long, some get tired of dressing up, some decide that being greek isn't for them. Sometimes girls (esp. freshmen and other new students)rush just to meet people, not specifically to get into a sorority. Also, sometimes rushees have their heart so set on one house that when they're cut from that one, they drop out, even though they may have several really good houses left.
I rushed as a freshman and was a rusher with my house for the 3 years after that and I can tell you that, at UF, the women that stay in through prefs, virtually every single one gets a bid. Out of 700-800, only about 4-5 won't get a bid, and those girls are usually ones that suicided on their bid card. Additionally, those 4-5 girls are almost always offered snap bids right away so they still can be greek and go to bid day, etc.
Hope that eases some anxiety!
Good luck!

The time just won't go by fast enough!! 14 more days til rush and I have butterflies in my stomach 24/7!! I just really need things to work out well....I'm so nervous! What has really helped is to be able to come to this website and get advice and encouragement from all you sweet people. Most of my friends are anti-greek. They believe all the stereotypes and have been giving me major grief for rushing. But this is something that I really want to do. I find myself trying to defend the greek system to them all the time, and I'm not even greek (well, at heart I am )
So I'm going to follow my heart (and the butterflies) and hopefully have a really successful rush.
Talk to you all later!

One thing to consider is that although 1200 girls may have signed up for Recruitment, the final number for quota may indicate that over 300 girls dropped out of Recruitment before bidding began. That is often the case.
You need to look at final Recruitment statistics to get a true picture.

UF Girl,
I am really excited for you! You are going to be fine. Hang in there and recruitment will be here before you know it. Maybe when your friends see how into it you are and the very positive things that Greek Life can be about, they will not be as negative. My mom was very anti-Greek, but over the years she has seen my continuing involvement with Kappa and I think has changed her mind. There are so many things you are going to experience (good things of course), and it's so great to hear your enthusiasm. Any chapter will be lucky to have such a motivated and excited young woman. You will get out of Greek Life what you put into it and so much more. Can't wait to hear what you pledge!!!
