Streak of Grace,
I'm so sorry that happened to you! That is too weird that they didn't take anything valuable, but nonetheless, I'd change my accounts JUST IN CASE (they could have written it down and go internet shopping or something...
I had a friend of mine whose car was broken into because I forgot to lock the door (so technically it wasn't broken into, but you get the drift). They stole her cd player. I felt TERRIBLE....but we filed a report and of course NOTHING was done. But that same night other people's cars had been broken into and the windows smashed in. She said she was just greatful they didn't smash her window cuz the deductable wouldn't have covered it and so she would have been out a CD player AND window.
I guess I felt responsible, but she didn't ask for me to pay for a new cd player...and actually she got a great deal on one if I'm not mistaken, and the boyfriend of a friend installed it for free.
So, to make a long story short, do what you think is best. It's a crock of a deal that you'd have to pay for the stuff but it's hard to say....if your purse was sitting in broad daylight then that is what obviously instigated the person to break in in the first place. But if not and they just HAPPENED to find your purse while searching...then I don't think YOU should have to pay for it.
Depending on how good of a friend she is, I'd bring these issues up.
