Hey, Welcome to Boston!

I was born and raised in a suburb south of Boston where I am living for the summer. I am doing an internship in Brookline - Coolidge Corner so I am driving through Boston everyday. I pass the Theta Chi and Sig Ep houses on Beacon St on my way to work and the Phi Sigma Kappa house on Comm Ave on my way home. Are these BU houses maybe?

Anyways, welcome to Boston. It's a great city.
Nope, those are MIT houses - BU sold most of them to MIT a couple of decades ago.

All of the BU houses are back in Brookline or Allston/Brighton, on the other end of campus (think Packard's Corner).

Hey, thanks to all the folks who welcomed me to beantown. If anyone is up for something tomorrow night, I don't know many people here yet, and I think it might be nice to meet some other GCers. Maybe even get a few of the Boston GC crowd together.

I'm in Iowa until sunday - after that I'm sure I'll be up for a cocktail or two though.

Sounds like a plan - can someone pick a time and a place? I'm going to fall back on my "I just got here" excuse for why I won't be the one to decide. :-)

oops, my bad. I just assumed they were BU because they are so close to the BU campus. Why are alot of the houses in Boston so far away from their campus? Are they college owned or nationally owned?

haha, easy mistake to make . . .

Basically, it all boils down to the fact that the city situation is centuries older than greek housing. You take what you can get - that's why some MIT houses are closer to BU, some BU houses are closer to BC, and so on.

BU dumped the greek system a while back, then let them back on gradually (sans houses) - that's why some of the MIT houses are literally in the middle of BU. The houses were sold to MIT chapters at the time when BU wouldn't allow the houses on campus - there was a giant drug scandal at the time. MIT's LXA, Phi Delt, and Beta houses lie among BU residence halls for this very reason (and LXA was founded at BU . . . very stupid scenario IMO).

Some MIT fraternity houses are in Boston because MIT was originally located in Boston. Others are in Boston (like KSig RC said) because you take what you can get - housing is scarce in Boston and Cambridge. I know that AXO and Sigma Kappa spent years trying to find houses, and the houses they did find are in Boston... AEPi's house is practically in the middle of the BU campus.... and two houses are way out in Brookline.

At one point MIT built a dorm intended to be housing for several fraternities... but the plans changed, and it now contains the language houses.

Is there anyone besides KappaTarzan and I that'd be up for a small post-work get together tonight? Rather, is there anyone who is up for it that knows Boston well enough to suggest a place?
