In terms of the priest question. I believe Episcipalian (sp) Priests dress like Catholic priest and are permitted to be married. I'm not really sure if this is the correct name, but I know there is a group out there that act and dress just like Catholic priests but get married.

FINALLY!
Ok, I finally got to see Signs! Well, I guess it hasn't been out that long, but I've been wanting to see it for forever!
Thanks everybody for not giving anything away.
I have to go see it again though b/c our movie reel messed up (the entire reel--probably 2nd or 3rd--when the sherriff is visiting at the kitchen table) and the bottom half of the movie was on the top of the screen, and you could see the boom hanging over everybody's head! Everybody was laughing, but it was SO not funny! I was PISSED! You could never see the little girl, b/c she was right at the height where the screen was messed up.
I did jump out of my skin a couple of times though! Good Job M. Night!
Did anyone think it was a LITTLE much that he wrote, directed, produced, and had a crucial little cameo?!? Albeit a well-acted cameo, but share the limelight a little bit!
Oh, and I didn't think the end was predictable. I was figuring it out along the way, just a few minutes before all the climax-scene happened, but it was NO way as predictable as Unbreakable. I could have written that script word for word 10 minutes in!
Oh! And did I mention that over half of my chapter went to see this together? Talk about sisterhood! Most everyone was sitting in someone else's lap by the end (my chapter is full of chickens!)

I saw "Signs" on opening night..it was one of the freakiest movies I have ever seen. I walked out of that movie with a feeling I have never had before, and hope to never have again. I can't even describe it. But, I screamed soooo loud in a few parts. Not as loud as this one girl though, who made everyone laugh so I think that drowned out my screaming a bit. I agree that it is much more than a movie about aliens...it's a movie about faith, beliefs, and family. Definitely made me and my friends think about these things and we had a nice, long discussion afterwards at Taco Bell.

According to my friends who have seen it, he's Episcipalian, which was evident by where he was from for them and they're both obnoxiously brilliant....I can't decide on whether or not to spend my money on it because they were saying it's this big faith thing and the whole aliens coming and making contact, or preping to take over the world was just incidental, so you see this guy who had, lost, and regained his faith....sounds like a great bildungsromanian flick, but attach it more to the plot, I guess.

Okay first of all a warning to those of you who haven't seen it, I'm talking about a few give away things here.

Okay so did it occur to anyone else that the whole movie might have been a dream? My boyfriend and i were talking about this after seeing it. I mean, when you look at the very last scene and the very first scene, it's totally possible that everything in the middle is a nightmare? It's a long shot but it kind of makes other things in the movie make a lot of sense. The flashbacks to the wife, the ending, the aliens. I dunno -- but I do want to see the movie again to look for this stuff.

There was definitely more to this movie than meets the eye. It's the kind of movie that sticks with you after its over. I don't scare too easily when it comes to movies. But the lights stayed on all night... I think it was the subtilities that played with my imagination. I know I want to see it again. I'll make sure its at a better theatre..it was farrrrrr too musty and it didn't help with the alien effect.

Okay don't read below if you don't want to spoil the movie.........
So like in the end when the alien is holding the son....I didn't see that little thingy come out of his wrist and I totally thought the alien was going to surprise us and heal the boy (by the way he was waving his arm over his chest). Yeah a little wrong...but oh well LOL!
I loved this movie. I loved how deep into religion it went and into believing in the little signs that we see everyday but don't realize it. The little miracles in life that save us. The coinsidences like how on the couch, Mel tells his brother that the last words his wife said were "Swing Away" and how that was what ended up saving their lives. That the daughter had a form of ESP...envisioned her brother dying....him having asthma and not being able to breate in the gas....the water glasses Mel was going to clean up, but never did....EVERYTHING. Sure, there was a lot of foreshadowing in a way....but it was just so awesomely done that you didn't understand why things were playing out the way they were until the end.
Likewise, I like someone idea above that it was a dream. I can totally see how it could be that way. How he bolts up from a nightmare....and then we see his nightmare....and then see him getting ready for church.
I also liked how SOUND played a part in the beginning...how evident sound is. Like how by the crickets silencing Mel immediately bolts up thinking something is wrong....and there is.
As someone who studied a little bit of film, I'd have to say my favorite scene is when Mel's son is in the hands of the alien and the camera shows him directly in the corner, almost looking down on him and zooming in on his face. It really gave you an honest to god idea of how little and helpless he felt (at least that's what stuck out to me).
Clever and awesome. I'd go see this again in a heartbeat!

I hadn't thought of that until now, but I think it totally makes sense. I DEFINITELY have to watch it again and see if I can figure it out. Maybe they'll interview the director someday and the topic will come up.

I saw it with a friend of mine last night at 11, and I was completely freaked out. It was awesome, though I was able to sleep with the lights on last night
My only problem was that for some reason, there were a bunch of high school kids in the theater (they should have had to go home at midnight...mandatory city curfew) and they were being incredibly loud at the beginning. It started to quiet down, when one of the girls yelled out "he's molesting me!" and before I could think I said "would you just shut up?" and this person behind me said, "that's what I'm talking about!" I wanted to high five that guy, but I kept to myself. There was also this mysterious illness that caused people to forget to turn off their phones and they were ringing through the entire movie. I'm going to have to go see it again without all the distractions.

That movie was so freakinly awesome!! My boyfriend and I went and seen it last night. This was his second time seeing it, the first time he had seen it with a fraternity brother of his. He told me he was going to take me to see it because he definetly wanted to have his girlfriend clutching on his arm instead!!! LOL! I recommend this movie to anyone!! The drawback is....you'll have nightmares!! The whole ride home (an hour) I kept looking out into the forest waiting to see something jump out at me..I was even scared to go asleep!! Yeah, I know I'm a wimp.

Two thumbs down - no amount of acting could have saved that movie, I was not impressed at all. Not scary, not all that thought-provoking in my opinion.

I knew when the alien was holding the kid (fingers showing) and moving menacingly that he wasn't there to heal. He had to have been really ticked off since his encounter with Mel earlier.
The reflection through the tv screen was the absolute creepiest thing I have seen since Hitchcock's, Psycho, shower scene.
Oh, the religious references were there, but I don't think they were fully explored. I guess that's what could make the movie even more frightening, you know, when you interject your imagination.
