I really recomend you talk to someone in the residence life office and plead with them to be put on a waiting list to be moved to a freshmen dorm/floor. I know it may be rough waiting, but it will be worth it if they put you in a regular dorm...I was stuck in a upperclass dorm that had suites and all the girls were already best friends so making friends with them was next to impossible...I don't want to freak you out, but good luck with it, and really try to talk to someone in res. life.

SORRY IN ADVANCE FOR THE LONG POST...

I am an alum and an advisor of a chapter at the school that justhey76 is attending, and I can totally tell you that it happens all the time (RHA putting freshman on sorority floors)....I haven't heard if we have non-members on our floor yet, but I'm betting we do, too, if our floor isn't full.

My advice is to stick it out on that floor...if you request a transfer you will more than likely get put into one of the older high rises that are WAY away from the "Leoser" complex (read: farther from the cafeteria, convenience store, computer labs, classroom buidling, etc.). Besides, the AOPi floor is on one of the more newly remodeled floors! AND, I totally give props to your new roommate for upholding strict silence, as they are supposed to do at NSU. I know that makes it difficult for you, though!

Don't worry about going through recruitment while living on their floor! It will totally be okay! I would bet that there are girls living on the other sorority floors who will be in your exact same situation! This has happened for the past few years that I can remember, at least. And, if you happen to pledge the sorority whose floor you live on, then you won't have to move! And if you don't, right after recruitment, new members flock to the housing office to put in room transfers to any available rooms on the sorority's floor they have pledged. It costs like $10 for a room change (may have gone up since my day!) and all your new sisters will help you move (if need be!). If there aren't any rooms available immediately, then you can move at semester, too. I HIGHLY recommend living on the floor if you join a sorority at NSU...it's a GREAT experience...I lived on my floor for 3 years and LOVED it!

Good Luck!!!!

As far as meeting other freshman...are you attending Rookie Bridge Camp? My advice would definitely be to go to one of the sessions...I'm sure you'll make a friend or two there (whose probably going through recruitment, too) and explain to them your situation...that your new roommate who you don't know is in a sorority and due to recruitment rules you can't go places together...I'm sure it will be okay! Besides, you'll only have 2 weeks of that...which I know can seem insufferable, but you'll manage! I have confidence that as outgoing as you seem you can make friends!

Good luck!

at penn state we have sorority floors and we have sororities living in east halls where the freshman typically are. our floor often gets filled by freshman. we are only alloted 20 rooms out of 28 because some of the sorority floors down in south halls only have 20 rooms on the floor. they do this to make it equal. we're never roomed with a random though. housing let's us have singles so it doesn't happen. i wouldn't be too worried about pledging a different sorority than aopi. chances are 2nd semester you'll be able to move on to your sorority's floor when some of the sister's go abroad and they need to fill spaces. also, we aren't allowed to pledge someone who is living on our floor. if they wind up in our sorority housing moves them. it has something to do with the possibility for hazing or something. i'm not too sure what the offical say is. i hope everything works out for you!

Back in the early 90's I attended Morehead State University in Ky. My freshman year I was stuck in a suite on the Delta Gamma floor. I did not go through rush that year. My experience was living w/the DG's was not that great. If you weren't a DG you were not accepted and if you had to be in one of the 5 sororities in order to be accepted. THere was a DZ in the suite next to ours w/3 DG's and one DZ. The DG's got really angry that she did not pledge DG so they made her life miserable. I think it was worse for me since I didn't rush that year. One of the pledge sisters from DG, who I knew from one class, came up to me in the hall one day and asked if I would be moving out so that one of the pledges could stay in my place on the DG floor. Two months later I moved out. I could not take the stress and from just being around the DG's I really disliked greeks especially DELTA GAMMA's! My sophomore year, I lived on an independant floor in the sorority hall. That was a much better experience. I got to meet alot of the girls in the sororities~especially the DZ's and CHI-O's. So when spring rush rolled around I went thru informal and pledged DZ. Not all sororities are alike and towards the end of my sophomore year I met some DG's I became friends with. I guess you can't judge an organization by 3 people like I did. I hope your experience w/the AOPi's is better than mine was. I wish you the best of luck.
