question to everyone....

for pref... black or white?

We always did black formal/ semi formal dresses (normally we all got matching garters to wear under our dresses so we would have something "matching" to remind us we were all in it together), but I have been told by others who went through pref the years I was involved (96-00) that they found the black to be a turn off, that it was "intemidatingand depressing". I do know that several other chapters on campus went to white dresses for this same reason.

I got to thinking about this my junior year because we decorated the room with white tablecloths, white tulle, ivy, white christmas lights, purple punch, white/purple cake, white/purple candles and violet/ white centerpeices and in this beautiful room we looked like we were going to a funeral! I asked some of the older sisters why we wore black and they said they didn't know why, we just always had.

Is there a standard order/ requirements for pref parties? Also do any chapters you know of vary from black?

anyone have any opinions/ thoughts on this one?

IOB,
amellia

We have always done black..and honestly I have to say I am not sure why either. Perhaps it is to signify how important the ceremony is and to show respect, thats what I have always taken it as. I see black as a very formal serious color, so I like to think of wearing black at pref as respect. We usually go with lighter decorations and everyone has a variation on how they dress in black. One girl had just gotten a pair of candy red Stuart Weizman pumps and decided to sport those at my last pref...it definately jazzed up the place

Since we don't have a house on the campus I came from we would have to walk to a private lounge on campus in order to perform ritual and initiation. We would always get looks as 30 girls came across campus dressed in white. So in that respect, I like the black a lot better

I love pref...I am hoping to go back this year as an alumni to help out.

From what I remember (Since I'm newish) we wore black. I was thinking that maybe you all could wear a matching accessory in purple or white to make it less ...black?

We always wore black while I was a collegian, but sisters were free to choose the style of outfit they wore (just as long as it was badge attire). We wore badges, and I always wore a pearl necklace that a chapter sister made for me. I always thought it looked really classy, as you can never go wrong with a classic black dress.

Besides, we had pink punch at preference, and so if we spilled or splashed a little onto a black dress, it wouldn't be as bad as if it had been a white dress.

Laura

we always did all black (hose, dress and shoes) and the only thing we could wear was an engagement ring and your badge. we also had french twists that matched also. I guess it just seemed so blah next to what I have seen other chapters do....

of course being a klutz the black when drinking/ eating makes sense!

My chapter writes preference letters to the potentials. A sister is chosen (or volunteers) to write a letter to a certain potential. These letters usually include what Sigma means to the Sister and other meaningful things. If the potential ends up joining Sigma, they get their preference letter back to put in their scrapbook. I still have my letter, which was written by my best friend of 10 years. She joined Sigma the semester before me, so I was able to learn about Sigma before I went through recruitment.

Cool Pref Day

Well for our Pref Day, we always wore black dresses and badges or pledge pins, myself and another sister wore our pledge pins because we went through open bid last spring...anyways...when the girls would come in we would sing "To Get Me To You" by Lila McCann, oh many tears!! very sentimental...Then each sister would take a girl into a certain area in the formal living room and sit down and talk to her and show her our Sigma trinkets and scrapbooks and whatnot. Other girls who were nervous about talking would bring out cake and punch. Then we would bring the girls in and do a candle light and sing a song, then the girls would go back and talk some more, then they would go do the pearl ceremony and make a wish, then come back, and we'd sing "Tie a String Around Your Finger" then get the string back of course LOL, then we would go back into the foyer and sing "Pass It On" then the girls would leave and hopefully we'd see them the next day on Bid Day!!! Our Pref Days are very emotional and we look forward to them every year...
