I have a good one...
I know a girl who cut Sigma Kappa and Delta Zeta because she thought the "two letter sororities" block letters would make everyone stare at her boobs. The "three letter sororities" block letters would look more "even."

One time at the First Look Fair (every campus organization has a booth set up on the mall), someone came up and said, "So what is your full name, Sigma Kappa Kappa?" When we told him that some GLOs only have two letters (and I have heard of a couple that have 4), he thought it was less 'Greek' to not have 3 letters.
This has nothing to do with why I chose Sigma Kappa, but when you have 2 letters, it fits more nicely on a smaller shirt (now that average sized girls don't see the need to swim in XL shirts). When I was flyering for recruitment with some other Rho Gammas, (an AChiO and 2 Thetas) and we were talking about letters and they all said they don't like to wear letters because when you have three 4" letters, they go from armpit to armpit. If you get 3" letters, it fits very nicely, but they aren't as widely available as 4" letters.
I remember being excited to go to Theta when I went through recruitment because their colors are black and gold and I am a huge Steelers fan!
I liked how Alpha Chi Omega began in the School of Music when it was founded. I also liked their philanthropy. I thought I fit in, but it ended up not being the place for me.
About the SDT looking like EAT, the SDTs embrace it at UMD. There's a shirt with Tony the Tiger (Frosted Flakes) that says "We're Grrrrrr SDT!" They also have a philanthropy event called " SDT your way through College Park, where restaurants give some of their profits to SDT's philanthropy if you eat there on the designated night. I also think they have a shirt that says " SDT your heart out". I was at a PHA meeting once and this kid who was running for SGA was talking about the chapter houses owned by the University and he mentioned "Sigma Alpha Tau" and I just cringed. The kid was obviously not Greek.
I have a lot of pet peeves, but one of my biggest ones is when people say "EK" or write "EK". Especially people who should know better and should have learned how to make Sigmas.

Kind of off the main topic about non-greek pet peeves... At our student senate we had a hard time getting the non-greek people there to use the right nicknames for the sororities. They would call KAT "Kappas" and GPBs "Gammas." They also had a habbit of putting KK7 instead of KKG on things. Oy...

on the topic of non greek pet peeves, soooo many people say N E X (and its a nickname of ours) but they get confused when they see a sigma versus an E (like not realizing that it's the same organization) and Chi... lordy so many ppl say "chai" instead of "chi"
we actually had a host at an even say nu sigma "chai" and we all yelled out it's CHI!!!!! lol
and we had SDT at our school use the EAT reference too, having a shirt say "SDT your heart out", I thought it was sooo cute too!

I think this is soooo funny! I remember thinking the 4" letters were too small. We'd get the 6" letters because they filled out our XL shirts so nicely!!! That way even near sighted people could see us coming a mile away!
As for stupid PNM impressions, I remember visiting the sorority dorm with my sister when I was in high school. AOII was on the bottom floor with Phi Mu. When you walk in the dorm, you can look down the halls and see murals painted on the wall. AOII had a giant rose with a red frame around it. Phi Mu had this massive pink castle which I dubbed the "Magical Pink Castle" and remember telling people looked like someone had vomited Pepto Bismol on Cinderella's Castle. I swore I'd never join such a PINK chapter. In all fairness...they cut me! If there is significance to the pink castle for Phi Mu...someone clue me in.

Actually, there is significance to it.
First..Pink
And there is a popular song for sisters called "My Phi Mu Castle" (written actually about the house at Delta Beta - UIUC (for another thread).
It starts out...
I have a Phi Mu Castle
That's filled with treasures old...

Or like when Disney World painted it pink for their anniversary - was it the 25th or 50th? I have no idea anymore...
On the topic though, when I went through rush there was a girl who swore she would only join a chapter whose suite was on the top floor of the panhellenic building. Fortunately for the Greek system, she dropped out of recruitment upon being released by the "top floor."

Good to know...I always wondered. Now if someone could explain the Emerald City mural on the KD's wall that looked like a pile of green...oh well, I won't say!!

I was actually at Disney for that fiasco! I was very disappointed to not be able to see the real castle underneath all that pink stuff!
I actually don't dislike pink like I used to! It actually looks good on me since I'm blonde and extremely fair complexioned.

If I had actually gone through FMR, that would have been a reason for me to pick Theta.

The scarlet and olive have grown on me. Our house letter shirts are red t-shirts with Kelly green letters on a white background, but a lot of people from other houses have come up to us and said that they're really cute. (They're just jealous because their house letter shirts are either white or navy and not bright, noticeable red. )
Although, we had a couple cookie decorating events with some freshman dorms during finals and someone mentioned that it was really cute that we had letter shirts just for Christmas.

I've noticed when the scarlet and olive are used in relatively equal amounts, it looks really Christmasy, but when there's a lot of one color and accents of the other, it doesn't look Christmasy at all, you just notice the pretty contrast.

I'm a Kappa Sigma and our chapter refuses to get red shirts. We were part of a rebuilding era of our chapter and there were only 5 actives. So the alumni got us these bright red shirts with white letters and a green outline. The ugliest shirts ever and we had to endure these once a week during pledging, needless to say when we went active we went crazy designing all these shirts that werent red. So because of the christmas thing we try to stay away from shirts that are dominantly red and green.

Keep in mind I was only 18 when I decided to rush at UF. I went through the list of all 16 NPC sororities and picked which ones I liked best based on varying reasons. Some of the reasons were valid- such as the philanthropy. Others were not- such as the flower.
- I wanted Alpha Delta Pi because I just love the color azure, I think it looks great with white, and the lion had a special significance for me. Oh, and I had heard that they were very pretty. I wanted to be perceived as pretty.
- I referred to Alpha Xi Delta as "the one with the weird letter in the middle".
- The only one I remembered from the Rush newsletter I received before my freshman year started was Delta Gamma.
- Chi Omega's colors per se are not my favorites. But they are the colors of my mother country's flag. Hence my father would have been very proud to see me come home wearing them. I had heard both positive and negative things about them, but went to Rush with an open mind. It was the last house I visited on the second day of my first round. When I arrived home, I could not stop talking about how much I liked Chi Omega- because of the girls in it, their activities, and what they stood for.
- The Theta colors and symbols did not appeal to me. But I had been told it was the "smart house". That they were smart without being nerdy (this is important and relevant) and people could see me as a Theta.
- Phi Mu has the prettiest house at UF, I love the color pink (especially the shade they use), and they have a lion mascot. And since 1996 I have been having this recurrent dream about Phi Mu houses having spas and jacuzzis inside. Why Phi Mu and only Phi Mu, I do not know. I have dreamt it about both the UF and FSU Phi Mu houses.
By the time I found out about Alumnae Initiation, I was 28 and knew what was truly important. However, I will tell you that I love everything in the GLO I am pursuing AI with. No more spoilers for now- other than the fact that it's a great match in every way.
