Talking Great Post!

College Major?
B.A. Spanish, Doing my thesis and getting my M.A. in Spanish in May 2003. Someday hope to get my Ph.D. I don't know yet in what.

Current Career/Profession and Description? Bilingual Social Insurance Specialist for Social Security Administration, basically accepting or denying claims for SSI benefits. Speaking and interviewing with claimants and of course using my language skills to do just that!
Also an Adjunct Professor at Germanna Community College, teaching courses in conversational Spanish and Course on Hispanic cultural awareness to employer.

Dream/Goal Career (If its not your current)?
I am not sure, I would like to teach part time at a college some day, but I actually have a lot in common with Maria and Katey. I really enjoy working with the public and would like to be an administrator, perhaps pursue public policy or work in some other way in the government affairs area (whether public or private sectors). I guess I get from my dad since he has been a lobbyist for years in D.C.

Name some jobs you have held in the past?
Tons! Most recent ones include: Director of Education for a local non profit agency; Government Affairs Manager for a national transportation trade association; Fed. Gov’t Employee for DHHS/OIG; High School Spanish Teacher, to name only a few! I have also spent a lot of time volunteering with different orgs (like all AGD’s do!)

This Forum was an excellent idea! Perhaps we should take this on further and extend it to include and help other AGD’s through mentorship opportunities for recent grads from those of us already in the workplace, etc. I know that Rosevines tries to do something similar, but hey, we all know how wonderful our GC is! We all seem to access it so much!

Perhaps I will start with a post, name some great sites on-line or resources, to help in pursuing your dream jobs. Or even better yet, "what types of experiences do I need to be that person I want to be?!"
See my future post for a sample, perhaps others could also post things from different fields!

College Major? - communication studies, with an emphasis in public relations

Current Career/Profession? - corporate communications director

Description Of It? - I am responsible for how our company communicates internally and externally. All public relations and media relations are handled through me, and I work with a colleague on employee relations. My day-to-day job duties include reviewing most company correspondence, providing material for our website, producing all marketing materials (brochures, newsletters, fliers, ads, etc.), processing all charitable donations and managing a budget of nearly $600,000 for that purpose, speaking in schools and community groups about our company and industry, planning all employee events and parties, and representing our company to cities via membership on various boards of directors. I keep *very* busy!

Dream/Goal Career (if its not your current)? - I'd have to say that I'm pretty happy in my career, but I have a commute to and from work that is *rough*. I'd also have to be completely honest and say that my dream/goal career is to be independently wealthy and travel the world! I am looking to interview for a new job where I would work from home... and that would be wonderful. Just taking it day-by-day and enjoying where I am and who I work with for now.

Name some jobs you have held in the past? - starting from college, I worked at Victoria's Secret, on campus with freshman orientation, congressional campaign intern, on campus with leadership programs, university newspaper editor, (*graduated*) did some consulting work, wrote for a non-profit's magazine, and was in charge of a summer surfing festival. Phew!
