Although i do respect the decision of a moderator to close a thread if it gets out of hand. But, why not just delete that post, PM the person that made the comment and allow the thread to continue? In my eyes there was no name calling or desprecpting of any one person. We were simply stating out view points.

Interesting reply Bro. Blackwatch. Not that I have to justify my action to close the thread but in this case I will. The thread was closed when an individual posted that he hated white folk and homos. I deleted his post and closed the thread - - - That crossed the line for me!!!

I actually said that I couldn't stand them, not that I hated them. Hey prof. try using the quote feature on your replies, it works great.

fato,

If you say that you can't "stand" a group of people, then that's a pretty clear indication that you don't like them. I'm glad that Professor deleted your post if that's what you said. Racist hatred is unwelcome on this board, regardless of what forum you visit, and it will not be tolerated.

Kudos to Professor for taking action.

I think it's unfair for an "INDIVIDUAL" to make decisions for us based on his "PERSONAL" cinvictions. There either needs to be some consultation or we need more than just one moderator.I was pledged with the idea of I-ME-MY-MINE are words that do not rhyme. WE-US-OURS-TOGETHER these are words that last forever. Maybe it's just me.
Dexter,

I understand the point you're trying to make. If I may, let me take the other side for a moment...

The way I look at it, every individual in a GLO is a public representative of that GLO. If one person acts like an idiot, and it makes headlines, who is affected by the person's action? The GLO, of course. This has happened time and again.

For example, a fraternity member goes out and drinks irresponsibley, gets in a car, and has a DUI related accident that kills another person. Who does the media talk about? The individual or the GLO he was a member of? I think we all know that the GLO winds up getting the worst press, and one stupid act is what people think about every time that GLO's name is mentioned, even months after the incident. So, people don't remember all the good things that the GLO does but, instead, recalls that one senseless act by one irresponsible individual.

The same holds true when a GLO member makes a racist statement. Even though I'll be the first to agree that it isn't fair, more often than not it is the GLO who is punished by being labeled a racist organization simply because someone made a stupid comment about a particular group of people.

I think that Professor was trying to prevent Alpha Phi Alpha from being portrayed negatively when he closed the thread after Fato posted his racist comment. Rather than have someone get the wrong impression of an organization that he holds close to his heart, Professor closed the thread. I find that admirable, and I have to say that I'd probably do the same if one of my DZ sisters suddenly came into the Delta Zeta forum to say that she "couldn't stand" black people.

Just because we all have freedom of speech, it doesn't mean that we can say whatever we want, whenever we want. As responsible members of our GLO's, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard. We have to think about the potential consequences of our words, and the effect that they may have on our organizations if a non-member hears them. Then and only then should we open our mouths (or in this case, place our hands on the keyboard).

DZ,

First of all, You are always taking the other side. Secondly, I don't know how it is in your organization, but in mine we don't make unilateral decisions based on personal feelings. For anyone outside to judge my frat based on the ideas of one of it's members is ludicrous. Like I said there were other methods of dealing with it then to lock it.

Don't you ever mention my name again. You don't know me. I am whatever you say I am, and if I wasn't then why would you say I am?

General note: I don't respond to those who did not pledge!

All this shit is driving me crazy! Everyone needs to calm down. We are not going to slug it out on this site. Lets try to be MORE respectful of other opinions regardless if you like it or not!

You're right, fato. I don't know you. The only thing I know about you is that you made a racist comment on Greek Chat stating that you 'can't stand white folks and homos.' Since that's all that I do know of you, then I'd have to say that my impression of you is negative. You can only blame yourself for giving me that impression since it was only you who made that comment. If you don't want people to state that a post you made was racist, then don't make racist posts. It's as simple as that.

Good day!

My God, I actually agree with dzrose.
