Having been scholarship chair for my sorority I know all about this personally. We also do our study hours based on gpa, the main part of that being if you have over a 3.5 for the previous semester you dont have study hours. Our way of enforcing it is first off if you did not turn in study hours for that week you have no voice or vote at the meeting. Another factor is that the scholarship chair keeps track of the missed study hours, and if you dont make up all your missed study hours before a social function you cannot go. We do not fine for study hours because I have witnessed too many people who have money and just pay it off so they dont have to do it. The other factor is we also reward the girls with the most study hours. We do things like have a party at the end of the semester with the girls who have the most study hours total, ie ice cream party or what not. Also each week we give out what we call the scholarship crown to whomever that week has the most study hours. This person gets recognized for their outstanding achievments by the sorority and also usually gets some candy too. Another thing we do is if you get an A on a test, you can get a card to be credited for a study hour, so you dont have to go do one for that week.

The main thing I have to say is both reward those who do well and punish those who dont. That way people become encouraged to do well, not just to slide by.

I have heard from other chapters that required a certain amount of study hours per month. That way its really flexible to them as to when they can do it. That works well especially at the beginning of the semester when there is not as much work to be done. However, all of these hours had to be done at the house but if you don't have a house you can designate a certain spot in the library and have someone volunteer maybe two hours to watch the sign in. WOrked for that chapter but all chapters are different so it might not work as well for others.

Also, if you miss a certain amount of study hours you should be fined I guess. Someone earlier had said something about community service could make up for the fine which helps out those who are financially tight. Maybe if they miss a lot of hours consecutively, they should not be allowed to come to one big social event, like a date party/crush party/ mixer. Thats taking it to an extreme but if worse comes to worse it might get the point across.

I don't mind study hours (though mine haven't started yet) but I think more than 5 hours is a bit much. I think 3-5 hours is enough. If you do more than that you really are infringing on people's time. 5 hours is enough to get MOST homework done- I don't have that much in most my classes the majority of the time and more than that I would just be sititng there picking my nose

So, study hours are good- but only to an extent- too much can cause burn-out

This is what our chapter is doing for scholarship...which is badly needed. Everybody has to do 4-5 study hours on their own time, on their honors. Then, based on GPA, you have to do study hours in either the library or the PIC (student governance/campus org. offices). You sign in and out for your hours. Most of the other fraternities and sororities have to do this as well. Another thing I like is that we're doing a study buddy program with the SigEps. Each of us got paired up with one or two brothers based on major, and we can do study hours with them. It's really cool because my group is a senior cs/business major and a junior software engineer so it's like free tutoring for me!
