I am in an Alumnae chapter. There was another alumnae chapter that helped sponsor a celebration of MLK in their city. I attended the celebration with another soror in my chapter and had a very nice time. The guest speaker and performances were great! I can't wait until next year!

my first MLK day volunteering

i, along with a few of my soRHOrs, participated in City Year/Americorps 20th annual MLK Day of Service. there was an opening ceremony with Mayor Bloomberg, a closing ceremony with a spoken word artist performing "i have a dream" and a couple step teams.

there were various projects happening that day--mosaic making at a community center, repainting a school, making food for a shelter, and mural painting were among the projects.

we painted the principal's office and did a decent job!

i was most impressed by the turnout--a good half of the people volunteering were teenagers. props to the youth who had school off and came out.

EEEE-YIP Soror! I also walked in the parade and my feet still hurt...

After the parade I spent the rest of the afternoon reflecting about the civil rights era with my grandmother. We are truly blessed and I am so thankful for the sacrifices made for me.
