Teen held captive more than 3 years

After reading this article over 3 times something has to be up. She met her kidnapper through friends socially and apparently they had a relationship. Plus how did her relatives know where she was to "help" her escape. I'm just saying, if my mama knew I was held hostage somewhere, she would have called everybody to come get me. I just don't we are getting the whole story.

From reading the St. Louis papers, I'm thinking this is akin to a very severe of domestic violence, more than a stranger kidnapping/sex slave. He kidnapped her and then hunted her down and brought her back at gunpoint when she tried to run away. He beat her and raped her regularly. There's a certain amount of hopelessness and learned helplessness that get ingrained in the victim in this type of situation.

I agree and I do not think AlphaFrog was implying that this was her fault.

However, there are people who would not only imply but explicitly state that they believe it is the victim's fault for not ending the kidnapping sooner.

And I have Judges that don't understand why my client victims-of-domestic-violence don't leave and press charges. You just never know how you'd behave in a given situation. The thought "Walk a mile in her/his shoes first," comes to mind. I'd like to think that I would have behaved like those brave folks on Flight 93 in a similar situation, but thankfully I do not know, and truly hope I never do.

Yep. It's an unwritten rule in my county that judges will not reinstate a victim's protection order (restraining order or whatever you call it in your states) if the victim goes back to the abuser EVER.

It's like they've never heard of battered woman's syndrome.
