For real ... Sal Romano was considered out of the ordinary because he was Italian. If anyone besides Don had known the whole truth about him, things really would have been interesting.

Don was not always respectful and nice to Betty. I recall in the first (I think it was first) season, when Betty was a more sympathetic character, Sterling Cooper was pitching Heineken, and Don volunteered Betty to cook an "Around the World Cuisine" dinner for the client. He made her cook that ellaborate meal, then on top of it he humiliated her in front of all their guests by making her the subject of a bet regarding Heineken. That was a huge scene for me in terms of illustrating their relationship and how they treated each other. Betty had done what was needed for Don to do well at work, and he repaid her by making her the butt of a joke.

Forgot the round the world dinner........But she always reminded me of a cold fish.

Betty's cold fish character is not unlike many women of that era. She's from a very uptight "main line" family, she has been taught to stay with a man for the sake of her children and yet here she blows out of town with her new man. I see him almost as a father figure of sorts who comes into her life very soon after Grandpa Gene passes away.

ok I am new to the show and only at the beginning of season 2, but I can't wait any longer... Can someone PLEASE tell me what Peggy did with that baby?!

I think...and this wasn't a part of what brought me to the show....I think that I remember her going to her mother's house and there was a baby there. Peggy was/is very removed from the baby situation.

I found the whole Peggy's baby storyline interesting. In those days, if a girl was "in trouble" and the father could not or would not marry her, she was sent off in secrecy to a "maternity home" to wait out her pregnancy and surrender her baby for adoption. It was almost unheard of to keep a baby if you weren't married. A few older women who didn't have much to lose reputution-wise brazened it out but young girls almost never did. Families gave out cover stories, such as "She got a job in Cleveland and is staying with Aunt Edith" or "She transferred to State U" and no one talked about it openly but everyone knew what was going on. I'm an adoptee born about a year after Peggy's baby and a product of that system. Even when I was in school in the early 80s it went on. One year I came back from Christmas break to find that one of my sisters had suddenly decided to transfer to another school. The next fall she was back as if nothing had ever happened and I've always wondered.

well it didn't so much surprise me that she didn't keep the baby, I just thought it odd she chose not to even mention it to the daddy. And I mean damn she didn't even know or suspect she was pregnant. I understand she was on the pill but come on now... ok back to season 4

What's this Peggy-as-born-again-virgin crap? And what attraction can this Mark guy have for her? I mean, he's a nice guy but I don't see him with a go-getter like Peggy. I think Pheobe the nurse is cute and I love her hair ... the stylists are moving into the mid-60s. As for Don being with his secretary ... big mistake!

I was so confused by that part! Is Mark just assuming that she's a virgin, or did she tell him that? Also, does anyone else think that he looks a lot younger than Peggy?

You can totally tell that Don and his secretary are going to cause a problem- I'm interested to see what happens when/after he asks her to go with him to Mexico for New Year's but I'm even more (!!!!!) excited to see what goes down between Joan and her jerk husband, although from the preview it looks like she might be pregnant.
