Our biggest rivals are the chi phi's here - it's all in good fun, but intramural and IFSC sports and the like get pretty intense.

I don't know them very well, because I lived with three tri delts last year I'm really close to them. I'm also freinds with some of the nu sigs as well (local).
The deffers are very small here, don't qoute me on this but i heard they were down to under 10 actives.
The Ottawa-Carleton system here is very disproportionate, the groups are either doing very well or struggling.

Kevin,
Most of the fraternity houses at Miami are in little "groups". Our house (DU), Sigma Chi, Deke, Phi Tau, Lambda Chi, SAE, Sigma Nu, Sigma Pi and Delta Tau Delta (who are now gone for a few years) are all in the same area. Beta, Fiji, Acacia, Phi Psi and SAM are in the same area. Same with Phi Delt, PKA and Kappa Alpha. There are a few that are in the middle of nowhere by themselves though.

Hey Siobhan, what are the fraternities at UBC like? I heard the betas are all pretty boys. What's Kappa Sigma like?

My dad was a Beta at UBC, so I would think they must be cool!

Betas at UBC: Yes they are pretty boys, but the ones I know are very nice and lots of fun (my cousin is a Beta). They are one of the top fraternities at UBC (along with Sigma Chi and Kappa Sig). As far as Kappa Sig goes I don't know them that well but they are a very strong on our campus and seem like pretty decent guys. I'm closest with Sigma Chi and Phi Delta Theta: Sigma Chi is pretty popular, good looking, fun group of guys, very involved in campus politics. The Phi Delts are among the smaller fraternities, but are still a very strong chapter and a great group of guys to hang around with. Deke recently shut down and has just rechartered due to major internal problems, but from what I'veheard they are on the upswing. Psi U is pretty much gone, Fijis are the trouble makers. Alpha Delts are small, but again a good group of guys and excell at sports. And there is a new fraternity AEPi who have just colonized, so I don't know much about them, but they will be part of IFC Rush this fall.

On my campus, our rival, but a very friendly one, was with Theta Phi Alpha. The other rivalry on campus was between SDT and Phi Sig Sig. That was a NASTY rivalry too!

KKG is my sorority's main rival (I'm a Theta). Our other rival is Delta Gamma. We're all friends though!

As a fellow UBC greek, here is my take on our Greek system & it's rivalries ...
I agree with Siobhan in that the Betas here at are the pretty boys. This year they have an intense rivalry here with KSig for intramural supremacy.
In terms of the sororities, I'd have to say that our (AGD) biggest rival has traditionally been Kappa, though lately it seems to be Gamma Phi in intramurals ( we are currently #1!!).
Within the UBC greek system, there seems to be a few tiers when it comes to the fraternities & sororities (numbers-wise). For the fraternities, it's Beta, KSig at the top with Fiji & then Sigma Chi next, followed up by Alpha Delt, Phi Delt & Psi U (I've omitted Deke & the new AEPi).
As for the sororities, Kappa, Gamma Phi, ADPi & us are at or near total, with DG & DphiE not far behind, & then Alpha Phi (still holding in there).
I've got friends in almost all of the fraternities (except Psi-U & AEPi), & most of the sororities as well. It has definitely been interesting to watch our greek system (& especially the FIJIs) evolve over the past four years.
Just my thoughts.

Wow, definitely a discrepancy in opinions of campus
I was curious about the betas because in Ontario they're all big guys, and at carleton they're not very well-liked because they start a lot of shit. In fact, I'm good freinds with guys of every other fraternity except them and phi delta theta.
I was just talking the other day with one of the tri delts about how much the greek system is changing. Between Ottawa-Carleton there are 10 active fraternities and 9 active sororties founded within the last 12 years.
There's many other groups also looking to expand to the capital region. In fact, Zeta Psi (who are on a tear expanding across Canada) are scoping out the campus looking to colonize for september.

Living so close to one another is not a big problem I don't think. I think fraternities at Miami are very segregated -- you don't usually see a lot of chapters working closely with each other like I've heard at other schools. That's just what people who have visited here have said. I think a lot are indifferent towards each other -- we don't really have a problem with the majority of fraternities nearby, and there are 8 within a 1 minute walking distance.
At our Greek Convocation, the keynote speaker had said that at the school he works with (forget where), you could walk into a fraternity house and it wouldn't be unusual to see a group of guys studying from a handful of different chapters. Here it isn't very common in my opinion.
Sororities are closer than fraternities here I think because they are not allowed to have houses. Having a house can make you feel like you have your own territory, and you "defend" that territory and might not feel comfortable at another house. I guess it depends on the individual though.

Brian,
That's cool. On my campus we didnt have a greek row. We had around 16 Fraternities. Then we had 6 sororities. They just added another one recently. Alpha Xi Delta. We didnt have any greek housing which sucked but then we did intermingle a lot more. Probably more than if we did have a row. However we did have our share of rivalry during IFC Intramurals. Our beach week(Myrtle Beach, SC.) brought our greek life closer together too which was nice because sometimes you got to meet others that you generally didnt hang out with during the year.
