I wonder if Theta Chi has one. No one's told me yet, so I don't think so.

Theta Chi is taken from the first letters of the Greek words for asisting hand.

No patron saint or goddess here - AEPhi's founders were Jewish!

The letters are derived from Aei Esto Philia = May Friendship be Everlasting. (This is not the same as the meaning of the letters as revealed at initation - that's a secret )

Our national magazine is Columns - because our crest includes 3 columns.

Alpha Chi Omega was founded as a music interest sorority at Depauw University in 1885 and since they were the first such sorority they were alpha and they thought they may be the last so Omega was chosen then the greek word for and "kai" was chosen to connect them. They then changed the Kai to the greek letter Chi because they sound the same, thus we are known as Alpha Chi Omega. Our patron goddess is Hera.

I wanna patron goddess!! OK, my Alpha Gams, I've decided that I think our Patron Goddess should be our founder, Emily Helen Butterfield!!! She was an amazing real life goddess and the things she did for AGD and the betterment of women was god-like!!

Yeah...October 23, 1885 at Depauw University with the help of James G. Campbell, Beta Theta Pi, the Alpha Chi Omega sorority was founded. Fascinating enough, kai means 'and', and to go along with the story mentioned below, Alpha (1st) AND Omega (last)......makes sense.

Interesting how Alpha Chi Omega used kai in their earlier days. Must have been a Beta thing?

He was instrumental in spreading the word of Delta Gamma and getting many DG chapters established. However, even though he was a Phi Delta Theta, Phi Delta Theta is not considered our brother fraternity, but Georga Banta is highly regarded and Delta Gamma owes much to him! Of course, he had daughters and grand-daughters, and they were all DELTA GAMMAS!!!
More on this interesting bit of history: That one male initiated at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, home of the Alpha Zeta (?)chapter of Delta Gamma. The Banta family has a long history with the school, and the football stadium is named after them (the Banta Bowl). Not all of his descendants went DG, however, one who rushed while I was a sophomore decided to join Theta.

It's amazing what you learn serving as a Rho Chi (yes, at Lawrence University).

Re: Re: Delta Gamma has an open motto "Do Good"

George Banta is one of the most respected greeks in history, second to William Raimand Baird of course. I live only 20 minutes from Lawrence, and the Banta family is well-known in these here 'neck of the woods'. He is the founder of the George Banta Co.; a good majority of the books that we all read were published by the George Banta Co., in Menasha, WI. Next time you are looking at a book, check it out, it may have been published by one of the greatest Phi Delts who ever lived. Actually, if you get a chance to look at your ritual books, they may have been published there as well. (Thats if they were not in-house..........which many are not!)

PS, his family is still one of Lawrences largest contributors.
