When something that is not really important to me gets me upset, I try to forget about it. It's not worth the energy. For example, the head of the PhD programs keeps asking me personal questions and keeps hinting at what her expectations of me are (and that I am not living up to them). I got upset about it, but couldn't do anything about it. Besides, she's bitter, has no life, and pisses everyone off. Plus, my advisor (chair of the dept.) supports me. I'm at a point in the program where she has no power over what I do next. She's inconsequential, so I let it go.
When something that is important gets me upset, I try to work through it without letting my emotions take over. I've realized that reacting to something out of anger often leads to more problems.
