I agree with others who say that meetings/voting should spark debate and discussion. The key is making sure that the discussion that's taking place is helpful and constructive. People being swayed one way or another isn't a bad thing, as long as the decision is based on something of substance.

Just create a way to have a discussion so that it doesn't get out of hand, and "force" members to provide points that are relevant to the nominee's strengths, weaknesses, and ability to perform the job at hand.

Look to your membership selection process/criteria. This may help you create a way to select your officers.

1-Roberts Rules of Order is your friend. Institute it especially for pre-vote debate and hopefully some of the problems will dissipate.
2-Women too often will avoid debate/conflict/disagreement to their detriment. This is part of the reason why I dont like slates; it keeps the members from having a thorough and healthy discussion of the issues, and maybe more importantly teaching them to understand that everyone doesnt agree with you all the time.
3-I want more women to campaign and win elective office. Learning how to sway people to your side (or standing up to opposition) is part of that learning process. Use it now to make my world a better place. Cool?

The Motion has Passed. :-)

We're going to be looking into Robert's Rules before the sorority year starts up.
