Wasn't sure if I should post this here, or in the Random Wedding Thread...

Does anyone really need a divorce ring?

D Jewelry Co.

There's a rather strange jewelry trend emerging. Seems "divorce rings" have suddenly become all the rage while I must've been sleeping under a rock. Now, this is not to be confused with the practice of retooling an old engagement or wedding ring. We're talking about companies like D Jewelry Co. and Transition Rings hawking brand new rings to those that wish to commemorate their divorce.

According to D Jewelry's website, whose rather condescending slogan is "Building self esteem one person at a time" (ooookkkkaaayyy): "The rings serve not only the purpose

Judge: Girl's name, Talula Does The Hula, won't do

Thu Jul 24, 5:41 AM ET

WELLINGTON, New Zealand - A family court judge in New Zealand has had enough with parents giving their children bizarre names here, and did something about it.

Just ask Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. He had her renamed.
Judge Rob Murfitt made the 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name could be changed, he said in a ruling made public Thursday. The girl was involved in a custody battle, he said.

The new name was not made public to protect the girl's privacy.
"The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child's parents have shown in choosing this name," he wrote. "It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily."

The girl had been so embarrassed at the name that she had never told her closest friends what it was. She told people to call her "K" instead, the girl's lawyer, Colleen MacLeod, told the court.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.
Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter "and tragically, Violence," he said.
New Zealand law does not allow names that would cause offense to a reasonable person, among other conditions, said Brian Clarke, the registrar general of Births, Deaths and Marriages.

Clarke said officials usually talked to parents who proposed unusual names to convince them about the potential for embarrassment.

Damn, you beat me to this! I came here to post this article. I seriously laughed when I read "Yeah Detroit" as a name!

That name makes me think of the song Baby's sister sings in Dirty Dancing. So now I have been humming it all day.

Obama sticker causes trouble

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/5904413.html

I see lots of bumper stickers I feel are offensive, but I've never thought, "I will stop and confront these people!" I actually saw a truck with those stupid truck nutz - driven by a woman!!! - and I just thought - wow, how stupid.

And I don't understand how in the world the sticker can be construed as racist. I hate, hate, hate with the fire of 10,000 suns all the varied "Calvin-rip off urinating on something" stickers out there. Work, Ford, Chevy, Dodge, la migra, UT, - I've seen a lot of things being urinated on via an ugly white vinyl decal.

In bad taste? Yes. Racist? I don't get it. Unless you assume that anyone who doesn't support Obama is racist, and that's a whole 'nuther thread.

Free speech, baby! I fully support the rights of Americans to slap stupid bumper stickers on their cars and trucks !

'Beer Pong' video game for teens sparks parents' outrage

Beer Pong is a virtual rendition of the popular college drinking game that requires players to toss Ping-Pong balls across a table and into a cup of beer (if your cup is hit, you drink). The game was designed for the popular Nintendo Wii platform, and its maker had planned to release it as the first game in its new Frat Party Games series. But concerned parents began sending angry letters to JV Games and Nintendo - Connecticut attorney general Richard Blumenthal even got in on the action, sending his own missives to the companies - until JV Games agreed to change the title of the game to Pong Toss and fill its pixelated cups with water.
