BALTIMORE - Former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume announced Monday that he will run for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

"It is with great pride and deep humility that I announce to you today my candidacy for the Senate of the United States," Mfume said at a news conference in Baltimore.

"I can't be bought. I won't be intimidated. I don't know how to quit," Mfume said as his supporters applauded.

Mfume, who was a five-term U.S. congressman before becoming president of the Baltimore-based National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (news - web sites), issued the statement after incumbent Paul Sarbanes announced Friday that he will not run for re-election.

"This is step one in what will be an embarrassment of wealth for the Democratic Party in 2006," said Derek Walker, spokesman for the Maryland Democratic Party.

Mfume, 56, left the House in 1996 to take the NAACP post.

At the time, the civil rights group was in turmoil — rocked by an embarrassing sex scandal involving its previous head, bitter internal strife and a crippling $3.2 million deficit.

Many observers say Mfume brought credibility and stability, working to institute corporate style-management practices. When he stepped down in November, the organization had enjoyed a budget surplus for eight consecutive years and an increasing endowment fund.

Mfume, whose adopted West African name translates to "conquering son of kings," began his career as a dashiki-clad radio talk show host and political activist in the 1970s.

He also has been mentioned as a possible Democratic candidate for governor of Maryland.

Sarbanes, 72, announced Friday that he would not seek a sixth term, noting that he would be 80 by the time that term ended.

"It was just the right time," Sarbanes said. "We think we've served long and well and honorably, and we're very comfortable with this decision."

Maryland traditionally votes Democratic, and went for John Kerry (news - web sites) in the 2004 presidential election. Sarbanes, the longest serving senator in Maryland's history, is serving alongside outspoken Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski (news, bio, voting record).

Four of Maryland's six Democratic congressmen, Ben Cardin, C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger, Chris Van Hollen and Al Wynn, said when Sarbanes announced his retirement that they were considering running for his seat.

I hope I am too because I got that feeling as well. I think he did know her. It just doesn't seem right that this man went from a killing rampage to "philosphizing" (yes, I made up a word) about life with some random woman.

I just don't understand how of all the places he could have gone with that truck that he stole from the Customs Agent, why did he just pick her house???

I mean, sure he would have been found had he gone to a relative or friend, but doesn't that complex have peep holes on their doors??

I guess what I am getting at is I don't believe he broke into her townhouse. I'm not saying she's not telling the truth...I just don't believe the truth she's telling...

A former Atlanta prosecutor, she's clearly grieving the loss of the judge and stenographer whom she knew personally, which I fully understand. But her demeanor, in her role as a journalist, is over the top. Her questions are leading, and presumptive of guilt. I don't like Nancy Grace and her huge nostrils at all. She talks the same way when she's doing Michael Jackson's trial like she knows he's guilty. Then she doesn't let you answer because she always cuts you off midsentence. I don't understand. I thought all media was supposed to be impartial.

I have this magazine, and I liked Queen's layout. My only complaint is that one of the dresses is from Dress Barn , or polyester palace. Let me go on record ( ) and say, I watched more of what happened last weekend on CNN last night. I am still a little leary about the details of Ashely Smith's story. I see that she suffered from depression, so that's probably why she doesn't "have her daughter". If there is a connection between Smith and Nichols, it will come out.

I see she gets the $60,000.

See this is why I'm all dazed and cawnfuzed like Sophia in the Color Purple......

First they said he broke in her house, then on CBS this morning, they said he knocked on her door.

Okay so what did he do, knock, knock, knock......Ma'am I was just wondering if you could share the good word with me today because I'm in some serious trouble or did he ask if she could make him some pancakes(that was also mentioned in a report)???

Maybe he was tired of jacking people and shooting, so he wanted someone to witness the goodness of Jesus to him since he knew he was pretty much done for???

The whole thing just seems soooooo bizzare.....LOL.
