Take this bit of advice. Everything you say here reflects on your letters. Even if you don't understand that, think about your other chapters. You're going to get people upset with some things you're saying.

I think we are all getting off the real issue here. The reason why this thread was originally started. Myself included. Everyone has different opinions about this situation. And most likely their opinions won't be persuaded. There willl always be someone to takes offense to any actions taken by others. but it's a sham ethat the only ones that get paid attn to are the ones about race. We live in the year 2004. I thinks it's time to put the past behind us and try to think of ways to better ourselves as people in the future. But we can't do this, if we only continue to divide ourelves.

i hear you pike. I think this whole thread is a sad example of how we are still divided. Blackface is not acceptable to, and I believe you that they weren't trying to be racist. But it just shows that we're not familiar with history, and they really didn't know that African-Americans (and others for that matter) would find this offensive - which again, is really sad, especially if they have people of color in their chapter. Those people of color probably don't even know the history of blackface, which is why they didn't find it offensive either.

Intent, which we can't know has to matter. But I think it comes down more to an issue that is more sensitive to some people than others.

A statement was made earlier than these guys had to know the significance of blackface. Its been in the news, its part of history etc.

Thats not true. I have had diversity training, something that's so PC its almost not useful and its not normal study. I have a history minor and it was never mentioned. And outside of this web site I have never seen blackface mentioned in a negative way or even at all.

In fact I only have a dim recolection of really old movies having it in there, and hearing once that the mummers used to have it in their parade.

If they (the members) didn't do this with a malicious intent than the punishment and feedback far outstrips the situation. As a former chapter president I can honestly say I believe the Pike chapter failed its members by punishing them with suspension. Thats unfair.

Instituting a seminar to teach the historical significance would have been appropriate to alleviate the ignorance of chapter members, if they are indeed still ignorant after all this publicity.

Suspending the brothers because the external forces are "mad" at them, is just weak. I am seriously disapointed in their chapter president. Ultimately he is the one that is supposed to protect his members, even when they are unpopular.

Well, if such organzations are making people walk around like ducks, then ANYONE who is offended by the humiliation of ANYONE should take issue with that. However, since this type of action isn't geared toward the stereotyping and degredation of a group of people, their physical characteristics, race, ethinicity, etc. etc. etc., I really don't see what this has to do with the topic at hand, which is, since you seem to have forgotten, another white fraternity acting in a racist manner.
