Kindergartners carried knife, pistol onto bus
2 incidents in Greenfield in 1 week spark disbelief

March 5, 2004

GREENFIELD, Ind. -- Folks were stunned when a kindergartner took a knife to J.B. Stephens Elementary School on Monday. Then another kindergarten student brought a gun on Thursday.

"I'm just in shock," said Candace Van Halen, a 30-year-old mother of three children who attend the school. Her youngest, a daughter, is a kindergartner.

Administrators with Greenfield-Central Schools said they could not remember any similar cases with students so young.

Both incidents, apparently unrelated, occurred on school buses taking kids home from J.B. Stephens.

On Thursday, a boy being dropped off at his home gave an unloaded handgun to his bus driver before getting off the bus. On Monday, another boy, according to witnesses, threatened several students with a knife while riding home.

Authorities did not release the children's names. The student involved in the knife incident remained suspended Thursday, and officials have not determined what discipline to take in the latest case.

In both cases, school officials are working with local law enforcement and Child Protection Services to have conferences with the students' parents and determine what to do in each case.

The incidents left school officials reeling and moving quickly to inform parents.

After the Monday knife incident, several parents complained they were not notified until three days later, when the principal sent a letter home with students. On Thursday, school officials called local media after the gun was turned over.

"We want parents to be informed," Greenfield-Central Assistant Superintendent Ann Vail said. She asked the community for help.

"Parents, adults, teachers -- we all have to work together," Vail said. "We want everyone to be mindful that, while school is a congregating place, students are bringing these weapons from home."

The gun incident left school bus driver Barbara Begeman shaken. The boy turned to her as he stepped off the bus.

"He said he had something that he thought I should have," she said. "He said, 'My poppy would want you to have this.' I thought he was going to give me a picture or a piece of candy or a flower or something like that -- certainly not a gun."

Begeman called her supervisor, who told her to wait while he drove to her location. Officials eventually decided, on the advice of the Hancock County Sheriff's Department, to transfer the remaining children to another bus.

The driver said the student was always well-mannered.

"This teensy little child, you know," Begeman said. "It's not like he gets in trouble or anything. . . . We have a Christian family, and I told my husband, 'Maybe the good Lord sent me into that boy's life to help prevent a tragedy somehow.' "

Like Van Halen, Begeman pinned blame on adults rather than children.

"I'm just worried about (the boy). The adults, shame on them," she said. "A small child was able to get ahold of that gun, and I just say shame on them. . . . He should have never been able to get ahold of it."

In Monday's incident, student witnesses said the boy showed a knife to about seven children -- two of whom said he threatened them -- according to the letter Principal Candy Short sent home to parents. Several students immediately notified the bus driver, who stopped the bus and took the knife, Vail said. She described the weapon as a "large folding knife."

Authorities think the boy obtained the knife from his grandfather's home, where he apparently had stayed over the weekend, said Terry Bucksot, Greenfield's assistant police chief.

Although Greenfield police assisted the school, officials do not intend to handle the matter as a criminal incident, said Detective John Jester.

"Due to the kid's age, it will be handled more by the school and child protective services," Jester said.

Vail expects the suspended student to return to school when officials develop "a plan for his re-entry," she said.

Investigation into the gun incident was just beginning late Thursday. The Hancock County Sheriff's Department is assisting with that case because it occurred just outside city limits.

Vail said the pupil who turned in the gun, to the best of her knowledge, made no threats and voluntarily took the weapon to a bus driver. She was unsure what penalty that pupil might face.

Van Halen, the mother of three, recalled that she and her husband, Eric, moved to Greenfield from Indianapolis three years ago specifically because they liked the schools.

"An incident like this can happen in any school system," she said.

She has talked to her children about the incidents, she said.

"They seem to be in shock as well."

Child Attacked At Party After Being Kissed

Mar 9, 2004 8:50 pm US/Eastern
Five people inluding two minors are in jail accused of assaulting a 12 year old girl at a children's birthday party. The attack has left the girl in a coma with severe brain damage. Police say it all started with a game of truth and dare. A 12 year old boy at the party was dared to kiss 12 year old Nichole Townes. When he did his 14 year old girlfriend told her mother, who was the host of the party. The mother told the daughter to quote handle your business. That's when the attack began. Police say up to nine people took turns beating Nichole for an hour. The attackers ranged in age from twenty-six to seven years old. Police say the attack happened in several parts of the house. Nichole was unconscious for up to 20 minutes after the beating. She remains in a coma at a Baltimore city hospital with a severe head injury and minimal brain activity. Three adults all women and two young girls are charged with multiple counts of assault and child abuse. Police were initially told that Nichole fell down a flight of steps. An anonymous phone call tipped them off to the beating. And at that point it was a witness, a 13 year old boy, who finally cooperated with police. Police say it is possible that more of those at the party, including some juveniles, could be arrested in connection with what happened.

Even worse, all the alleged perpetrators are female. What kind of message do we send our girls to fight over a male person's attention this way?

Especially when you are a 14 year old with a 12 year old boyfriend. Boo he was bound to break up with you sooner or later. But notice the mom is only 12 years older than her daughter.

Okay why in the WORLD are kids playing truth and dare to begin with? I know kids are faster than I could have even thought to have been at their age but why is mom in the kitchen cool with this? My mother would have straight clowned my behind for trying to kiss on someone in FRONT of her and then would have laughed in my FACE if I said oh now he's cheating on me. I'm 14 WTH? One girl is never going to be okay and the others are about to have a substantial portion of their life taken away from them over a game. Parenting licenses need to be instituted to stop all these crazy people from procreating.

Exactly. Also, if they just had to give someone a beatdown, they should've done it to the guy. The girl only RECIEVED the kiss.

Maryland girl beaten, in coma after dare to kiss
Date: Thursday, March 11, 2004
By: The Associated Press

BALTIMORE- A 12-year-old girl was beaten into a coma by a group of other girls and women after she kissed the boyfriend of another girl on a dare, police said.

Three adult women and two teenage girls have been charged in the beating of Nicole Townes, who remained in a coma Wednesday more than a week after the attack at a Feb. 28 party.

"I have seen people beaten to death, but not a child and not for no apparent reason," Detective Donny Moses said. "This is a hideous story."

The attack happened after an unidentified boy, also 12, was dared to kiss Nicole. After the kiss, his 14-year-old girlfriend attacked Nicole, and others joined in, beating the girl for at least 30 minutes.

Monique Baldwin, 36, and Erin Baldwin, 19, were charged with attempted murder and assault, said Moses, who said he didn't know the relationship between the two. Kenya Keene, 25, was charged with assault and conspiracy to commit child abuse.

Two unidentified teens, ages 13 and 14, were also arrested, but Moses said he did not know the specific charges against them.

The adults are also accused of giving false statements about what happened, telling authorities Townes fell and hit her head on a wall.

ANDERSON, Ind. -- Authorities Wednesday were holding two teens accused of sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl with kitchen utensils in her Anderson home.

Corey A. Craig, 19, and a 15-year-old boy are suspected of assaulting the girl while they were baby-sitting her, police said. The younger teen's name was not released.

The girl's mother on Monday took her to St. John's Medical Center, where she was treated for severe vaginal injuries, police said.

"The girl required emergency surgery to repair the injuries that had occurred," Anderson police Detective Terry Sollars told RTV6's Jennifer Carmack.

Someone at the hospital called authorities because doctors suspected sexual assault, Carmack reported.

Police said Craig and the other teen threatened to hurt the girl if she told anyone about the alleged assault.

"It's one of the most disturbing cases I've seen in 22 years," Sollars said.

Craig faces felony charges of child molestation, intimidation and criminal confinement. The other teen's case was being handled in the juvenile court system.

The girl and her 4-year-old sister were removed from their home pending the outcome of the investigation, Carmack reported.

The suspects are not related to the girl, police said.

See, this is why I kinda have a problem with men babysitting girls, especially if there isn't another female in the house.

What in the world would possess those boys to do such a heinous thing like that??? The 19 year old needs to become someone's biyatch in prison.
