[Again, I apologize if the scenes are out of order or if I forget pockets here and there]
Episode begins with Rory and Lorelai in the jeep. Rory's in her PJs but the Dragonfly has a VIP guest....OMGWTFBBQ! Christiane Amanpour is in the hizzouse! Rory's idol, the woman she wants to be -- is at the Dragonfly, and an awestruck Rory is left practically drooling as Christiane leaves her business card, offering to help her with the job search.
Enter one fabulous Carole King song here for the last time. Liza Weil and Matt Czuchry are included in the opening credits, but they do not appear in the finale.
Commercial's done. The Gilmore Girls are in Rory's room. Rory's stamping 74 envelopes containing her resume. Lorelai's researching rollercoasters online. Apparently the GGs are taking a road trip this summer and riding the country's best rollercoasters at the same time. Rory finds a rocket thingy she bought for Logan and the GGs briefly discuss their non-existant love lives. It's also here that Rory finds out about the gigantic fete that Stars Hollow is throwing for her.
Luke's at the diner ordering 250 burgers and hotdogs and buns for all. The meat guy wants to sell him some bratwurst, but Luke's not having it. Luke's sister shows up with Baby Doula and asks how Lorelai liked the necklace...but we know that Luke never bothered to give it to her last week.
Later that evening, the GGs are at what looks like the last Friday Night Dinner. Rory is temporarily MIA because she's off having drinks with a prospective employer. Rory finally arrives and is so happy she could shit because she was offered a job by an online magazine and she's needed in Sioux City, Iowa ASAP because it's there that she'll join other reporters following Barack Obama's campaign (I LOVED THIS). Richard and Lorelai are extremely happy for her, but Emily makes no secret that she's disappointed because Rory's leaving. SRSLY Emily, who cares if the motel's seedy? New job also = no mother/daughter rollercoaster road trip.
The GGs go to Luke's to break the news to him and the Stars Hollow blabbermouths. Kirk, Lulu, Babette, and Miss Patty are disappointed because they were really looking forward to this. Luke, on the other hand, has something up his sleeve....
He visits Sookie and says that they should have the party anyway. Sookie agrees to do the desserts and offers Jackson's services at the same time. Meanwhile, an uber-secret town meeting is called to order at Miss Patty's to discuss this surprise party and Taylor Doose is the pompous ass, as usual. Still, the town bands together to make sure that Rory gets the proper send off. The GGs have no idea that all this planning is going on.
After Rory finishes the last of her errands with mom, she heads over to Lane's for one last girl talk session. Lane gives a Dave Rigalsky update -- he's living with his mom again and selling shoes. Zach interrupts the girls because the town needs Rory at home so they can finish setting up. Lane's not having it. The girls continue their talk, and Rory's nervous. She's also surprised that her mother hasn't started freaking out yet.
Rory finally goes home and it's here we find Lorelai ironing. IRONING. Have we ever seen Lorelai ironing these past seven years? I can't seem to recall it happening ever. Rory asks her mom why she hasn't started freaking out yet, and Lorelai responds with "It's too soon." They still have time together. First "awwwwwwwwww" moment of the finale, 40 minutes into it.
The entire town is putting the party pieces together in the town square when Babette comes screaming in like a banshee. I guess Babette's ankles also serve as a weather tracker because it's supposed to rain in Stars Hollow during Rory's party. They panic, but of course...it's Luke to the rescue.
Later on that evening, Lorelai goes to check on Rory as she's sleeping. 2nd "awwwwwww" moment. It finally hits her that she's leaving, and she cries as she watches her daughter sleep.
While this is going on, Luke's diner is covered with what looks like miles of tarps/tents/raincoats and ropes. He's gonna make this party happen and the rain's not stopping him. 3rd "awwwwwwwww" moment.
The next morning, the GGs are in search of their beloved neighbors, all of whom are not picking up their phones. They see everybody (minus Mama Kim) huddled under the ginormous tent Luke put together and it's raining like a mo-fo. Shit, even Michel is there. And he's SMILING! Since Kirk is the official sash maker, he gives Rory one made out of one of his mom's old nighties.
Richard and Emily are there and they share a tender moment with Lorelai. Lorelai's in disbelief that the town did this for Rory, but Richard tells his daughter that it's also a testament to Lorelai too, and that it takes a remarkable person to inspire all of this. 4th "awwwwwwww" moment.
Taylor ruins the moment when he gives his speech. He likens Rory's departure to a baby coming out during childbirth. Blech.
Rory puts us back in the moment again when she thanks the town for everything and thanks her mom and says that she's going to miss her mom so much. Six seconds on Lorelai and you're just about ready to cry too. The last time they had a moment like that I think was when Rory was giving her valedictory speech at Chilton.
Richard and Emily leave in the evening and Emily pitches a business plan to Lorelai. She's willing to lend Lorelai $$$, but it's obvious that she just wants to continue Friday Night Dinners. Lorelai agrees, but it's because she wants to. Rory bids a farewell to her grandparents, and Emily tells her, "It's an honor being your grandmother, Rory Gilmore." *tear tear*
Sookie reveals that the party was all Luke's doing. Lorelai goes to the diner in search of Luke to thank him, and he says he did it because he just wanted to see her happy. Next thing you know, they're making out in the street (about freaking time) as they should be. The rain's stopped by now, btw.
It's 5am the next day and Lorelai's going down her list of motherly advice and wisdom, including "DON'T WEAR SHORTS." Rory's in a daze, but interrupts her with, "Mom, you've given me everything I need." Last "awwwwwww" moment. Lorelai gets a move on, and Rory's wondering what the rush is. They have a stop to make.
Luke opens the diner early just for his favorite girls. Lorelai can't decide what to eat despite ordering every breakfast item known to mankind. Luke tells her to take all the time she needs. We also know that Luke finally gave Lorelai the necklace.
The final scene ends with mother and daughter talking about absolute nonsense in the diner, just as they did in the final scene of the pilot episode 7 years ago.
THE END.
