I have no problem with the automatic placement of BCS champions. I do think that the at-large spots, at least should be opened up. I think this year illustrates that pretty well.

With the understanding that only up to two Big Twelve teams may play in a BCS bowl, would you have put Mizzou in the Orange instead of Kansas? Frankly, I found it odd that KU was selected over Mizzou.
|
I'd absolutely have Mizzou in rather than KU. Missouri beat Kansas, they beat another BCS team in their OOC. They only losses were to Oklahoma (twice). I don't think KU will do very well against VT. I think Mizzou-VT would have been a hell of a game though.

As a Big XII fan, I'm still a little ticked that Mizzou, with the better record got left out of the picture despite the fact that they had actually beaten Illinois.

We definitely got a break with the upward movement of Ohio in the polls. (Which I realize was controversial.) Ohio even thought they were the ones going to the Rose Bowl, and I was happy we were just getting a shot at a "good" bowl game at all. Considering it had been since 2001 we had gone anywhere, and with our low performing seasons recently, my thinking went from "let's just get a winning season" to "we're going to have a post season!" to..."we may go to a BCS bowl?!?" Whoo hoo!!
Gift horse comes to mind, and I'm just thankful our seniors (and Mendenhall) were able to have a January football experience for their last year in orange and blue.
For what it's worth, I think Mizzou should have been in over KU too.

Hubby says at half-time, it's over. I said I don't think so, you never know if Hawaii will score and/or UGA will do something stupid.
I did feel sorry for Colt B...just a little, lol. (and OTW, lol.)
But hey, sUGAr Bowl is our's...for this year!

I almost felt bad for Hawaii - I mean, they obviously weren't used to playing a real team so they were soooo unprepared for the Dawgs. I honestly thought they'd do a little better and put up more of a fight since they're undefeated and all... but I gotta say - I so called that Georgia handed them their only loss of the year and it was almost not fun to watch

I actually stopped watching early in the 4th Quarter. I was holding on to hope that Hawaii would start to put up a fight. I even felt that a UGA player showed bad sportsmanship by throwing up the Hang 10 sign after a big play.
At least they got a touchdown in, and the fans and the band went WILD! It was great to watch that moment because you would've thought the Warriors were scoring the winning touchdown. I kinda feel bad for Colt Brennan though. It has to suck that the 2nd String QB was responsible for Hawaii's only touchdown.
Great quotes from ESPN.com:
"We're No. 1," Georgia safety Kelin Johnson proclaimed. "We're supposed to be in the national championship game. The nation knows it, everyone knows it."
"It was the fastest team I've probably ever seen," Brennan said. "We just couldn't get into our groove and do what we wanted to do."

The fact that Tyler was able to step in is a good sign for next year.
And I have to agree, UGA deserved to be in the national championship game. The Bulldogs played a great game, but they really should have been playing next week.
Thanks, GC, for not rubbing it in too much. It still stings.
Go Ohio State!

UGA certainly deserved to be in THE game, I agree. J was saying that he thought it would have been great to see UGA and USC play - more evenly matched game. And Brennan was right - UGA was just too fast for them. The teams just weren't evenly matched so it wasn't exactly a fun game to watch, even for a UGA fan.

I'm happy Hawaii made it to the big time even though Georgia gave them a beatdown.

I'm loving the renewed talks about the playoff or the plus 1 game. All conferences except for the Pac-10 and Big-10 are pretty much in favor. Hmmmm, I wonder why. They would rather keep their "precious" Rose Bowl tradition in tact than actually have a decent/meaningful/necessary system of determining a national champion. I really liked whoever said in the article I read on ESPN that if the Pac-10 and Big-10 refuse.......they can just be left out of the equation come post season time.

SEC Football Post-Season Notebook
LSU's 2007 BCS National Championship is the Southeastern Conference's fourth in the 10 years of the BCS. Tennessee won the BCS National Championship in 1998, LSU in 2003 and Florida in 2006.
The SEC is the first conference to win back-to-back BCS titles.
The SEC is 11-4 all-time in BCS bowl games. The SEC has won four BCS bowl games in the last two seasons.
The SEC's seven bowl wins this season is an all-time high for any conference. SEC had six last season (previous high).
The SEC's 7-2 bowl record this season is first among the automatic qualifying BCS conferences (.778 percent) and second overall (Mountain West - 4-1, .800 percent) this season.
This season, the SEC posted a 47-10 record against non-conference foes (.825 percent), which is the highest percentage of all FBS conferences. 47 wins ties an SEC high all-time (last season, had 47).
The SEC now has 184 bowl wins in its history, which is tops in FBS.
The SEC's bowl win percentage of 52.8 (184-164-13) is percentage points ahead of the ACC's 143-128-5 percentage of 52.7 for tops among FBS conferences. Records are using 2007 conference alignments.
