They act like it's a really old tradition, but there was no such thing when I was there in the early 70s. Old Row referred to the fraternities left on the west end of University Boulevard.

They also have a super-duper-elite category within Old Row called First Circle, designating the three oldest continuously operating chapters. Agreed that all the categorizing is silly and divisive.

Like I said, I don't fully grasp the significance of Old Row even though it's been explained to me many times. There are a lot of PNMs that say "I'm going Old Row or nothing". It's always been a killer for both the PNMs and the other Chapters for Six Party/Skit Day round because Old Row consists of 6. I'm really interested in seeing some stats for this year since it was now 7 parties.

Another little tidbit, I already heard of 1 young woman who was released from all her Chapters of choice who is now trying to transfer to another school with delayed or deferred Recruitment. This is not the first time I've heard of this situation either. I think this is incredibly sad because for me it implies that sorority life is more important than her education.

I've also heard of women and know a few personally that purposely attend another school in order to pledge a certain sorority. Then they transfer to the University they really wanted and want to transfer their sorority membership. I've received many calls from upset sisters when they realize too late that the new Chapter is not obligated to take them as actives (at least for ADPi, I can't speak for others). They are really disappointed to be placed on alum status.

One girl did that when I was in college (she was a year behind me).

Could you phrase this better? I don't think that either of these chapters was "kicked off" campus.

wow, that makes me sad...and worried. I'm a transfer student - I rushed last spring but for many, MANY reasons transferred schools for the fall semester to a school which just happens to have a MUCH more competitive recruitment then the one at which I rushed. I just met with the new chapter yesterday and there's 12 other girls transferring in, (yes, I transferred to a HUGE school from a medium sized one) and I don't think anyone views me as being a social climbing, greek-obsessed, here for her MRS kind of person, and I sure hope not because that's in no way who I am. So please be careful before you look at a girl and say "Oh she rushed at tiny-school-ABC and transferred to huge-school-UofTheWorld just to get into XYZ sorority" - chances are there's a little more to it then that.

Sigma Kappa left campus due to low numbers - you're right, they were not kicked off. Delta Gamma supposedly lost their charter due to things that occurred in the 1970's that I would prefer not to mention on this site. I do not want to offend any DG's that may read it, especially if I am way off base.

Yes...the majority of NPC chapters leave campuses because of decisions made my their national headquarters, not because they did something so heinous that the school kicked them out.

I think you can probably usually tell when you meet the girl. If she still keeps in contact with her old chapter and speaks fondly of the sisters in it, I'd say she transferred for the "right" reasons. But when she can't remember a single sister's name and says things like "I am sooooo glad to be here instead of stuck at Moo Moo chapter!" well, then, yeah, she's a social climbing *****.

Yet another example of wild rumors. Our chapter has been gone for almost 30 years, but they persist. DG left because of numbers. Even in 1978, a dwindling chapter could not support the expenses of maintaining a house. Persistent rumors of promiscuous members, wild parties, drug use etc. are NOT TRUE.
I am not saying we did not have a few people like that, but EVERY SORORITY ON CAMPUS DOES. Yes, even now. Having 2 or 3 members like that makes a bigger impact on you if you only have 40 members instead of 140. They were dealt with, and ushered out...yet 30 years later, these rumors are still around.
Don't look for a lot of Panhellenic spirit and support at Alabama. Sorry, JMHO.
From a member, I understood Sigma Kappa suffered an internal split, and a vote was taken to surrender their charter before any regional officer could do anything. That's probably not accurate, either.

That's why I didn't elaborate on the rumors - because that's what they are...just rumors. Again, no details becaue I didn't want to offend anyone.

I love hearing about the girls that are happy! We are so lucky to be in that group as so many weren't!

Not sure if you are still interested since rush is over...but my daughter can't stop talking about how sweet all the girls are! She is so disappointed that she can't wear her letters yet, not until after initiation. Of course, not knowing this...I sent her a huge basket full of Pi Phi stuff...it's gonna have to wait in her room for now. More waiting....

aww so cute. We were allowed to wear things that had the name spelled out (I.E. Pi Beta Phi) but not the actual greek symbols, so there may be some wearble things!
