Ebonics suggested for district

SAN BERNARDINO - Incorporating Ebonics into a new school policy that targets black students, the lowest-achieving group in the San Bernardino City Unified School District, may provide students a more well-rounded curriculum, said a local sociologist.

The goal of the district's policy is to improve black students' academic performance by keeping them interested in school. Compared with other racial groups in the district, black students go to college the least and have the most dropouts and suspensions.

Could it also be the position of her hand around his neck that makes this couple look weird?

So, is Elise Neal going to be replaced on All of Us or is the show over?

I believe they're not replacing her but the show will continue for now. The only reason why it's still on is simply Will & Jada.

This is just not sound thinking, IMO. So tell me again how codifying ebonics, which at the next level (exempting the Black Student Union) won't be accepted at anybody's college/university or in the professional world, is going to help these children?
"Ebonical expression" is for your peeps in social settings or after work...and for Greekchat

The piece referenced Oakland's earlier adoption of this. What preliminary results have they seen?

Let's just dumb it down for our kids even more. I mean, after all, we're the only ones that speak "slang" I guess. Boy I'd hate to read those college application essays.

Thumbs down

^^
That's embarrassing. When will people ever learn that standard English is the primary language of commerce, education, et al? The classroom isn't the place for Ebonics.

^That pic does not even look natural.

As for ebonics in schools, why is that the solution that they came up with instead of trying to figure out how to help the students learn the English language? When a child has a stutter or other speech problem, a speech pathologist is called to help him. They don't put him in a class with a teacher who stutters. That is not the solution. It shouldn't even be considered. The school officials seriously think that ebonics will keep kids interested in school? They have a lot to learn.

Did anyone else get this? In the article it states...

"A pilot of the policy, known as the Students Accumulating New Knowledge Optimizing Future Accomplishment Initiative, has been implemented at two city schools."

That acronym is the SANKOFA Initiative...

I'm mad at that...real

Ebonics is NOT our history/past...nor is knowing ebonics going to help us understand why and how we came to be who we are today...so using SANKOFA as the acronym is way out of order...

or houw about this?

"For many of these students Ebonics is their language, and it should be considered a foreign language. These students should be taught like other students who speak a foreign language."

Hey Shaniqua...what language you took in high skoo?

"Ebonics, girl...ebonics..shoo...now I can really be competitive for college and be a doctor like my mama said I could..."

Who the hell speaks ebonics...? I can't even wrap my mind around this...it's worse because San Bernardino is the country-est of all places in California (from my perception) and (from what I've personally experienced) the "other" folks there aren't exactly the epitome of refinement and class...so, why do the Black folks always need some other type of curriculum to make us "more comfy?" It'll have the exact opposite effect and "they" know it.

As if Ebonics is the only way to keep AA interested in school. Sounds to me as if the goal of the program is to ensure that our children will not know how to effectively communicate to become successful.

Someone in the article compared ESL (English as a second language) to ebonics. Helllloooo... ebonics is not a foreign language and should not be treated as such.

So whatchoo sayin' is dat Shaniqua 'nem ain't finsta get inta no college bein' ebonically astute and thangs? Why you say dat?

I am joking because I agree with you.

Scenario: Two physicians...

"Whas wrong witcho patient?"

(Thinks to herself "why she aksin' me all deez questions?")"My patient got uhm...dag...what it's called??? Uhm...shalamidia" (chlamydia...I had a student actually pronounce it this way)

"Uuuaahh! You better go 'scribe her some medicines up in here...shoo."

END SCENARIO

Why????? I know this isn't "ebonics" either...more slang, I think. Ebonics is like seriously BROKEN English...like almost incomprehensible.

Aaaaarggggghhhh!!!! If I were a parent whose child was attending either of the pilot schools (which I never would be...too country for me, but I digress) I would DEMAND that my child not be subject to that curriculum...or I'd take my child out of the school, move to Los Angeles and resume life as normal...

Apparently it is optional? No? How do they determine who takes the course? Is there an entrance examination? What would the tests consist of?
