Cool Advice
By Jawn Murray, AOL BlackVoices columnist
Ice Cube <
http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/...dp?artistid=48> is
certainly a force to be reckoned in the upcoming 'XXX: State of the
Union,' <
http://movies.channel.aol.com/movie/main.adp?mid=17727> but
the rapper turned actor is a bigger force in Hollywood!
* Once establishing his status in Tinsletown, Cube has now set
the mark high for other rappers and musicians looking to transcend into
acting.
Having both earned acclaim and box-office revenue for the films in which
he's starred and produced ('Friday' series, 'Barbershop' series and 'Are
We There Yet?'), Cube has long proven that he's more than a musician
wanting to make flash-in-the-pan money in Hollywood.
Since establishing his status in Tinsletown, Cube has now set the mark
high for other rappers and musicians looking to transcend into acting.
"It really matters on how serious these guys take the craft and take the
art of putting movies together. That will determine how long they stay
in it or how far they go," explained Cube, while handling press duties
for 'XXX: State of the Union' at The Regency Hotel in New York City.
"But if they're just in it just because 'Oh, I'm going go over here and
get this side money 'cause I can and not because I love film and I want
to do this,' then it will probably phase out at a certain point. Then
they're not going to take the steps that they need to take to start
moving up the chain in Hollywood," he continued.
Among the names Cube mentions as "ones to watch" as they make the
transition from music to acting are Ludacris
<

<
http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/...rtistid=416191> and
Xzibit <
http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/...rtistid=194771> .
Cube is especially excited about the potential he saw in Xzibit, who
also stars in the new 'XXX.'
"I told him each movie you do is your audition for your next one. So,
take it seriously," he advised the 'Pimp My Ride' host. "Each day you
can give a better performance when you step onto the scene. So stay
focused! There are only a few months that you have to stay focused on
this one thing. But if you nail it, you could set a career for
yourself."
Apparently Cube's advice paid off as Xzibit will next star in 'Gridiron
Gang' opposite The Rock
<
http://movies.channel.aol.com/celebr...adp?sid=292998> . "I think
he has a future in it. I think he's going to be kind of like the new
up-and-coming guy who jumps in line with me, Will [Smith]
<
http://movies.channel.aol.com/celebr....adp?sid=66596> and Queen
Latifah <
http://movies.channel.aol.com/celebr....adp?sid=40714> ,"
added Cube.
As far as the new 'XXX' is concerned, Cube wants viewers to walk away
with one impression. "I want them to forget about the first one after
seeing this! I want them to say, 'Vin who?'"
Reality Bites
'24' star Roger Cross is no fan of reality television. Cross thinks the
genre has completely taken away the opportunity for budding actors to
hone their skills.
"Let's face it; reality television sucked a lot of the life out of what
used to be a lot of younger actors' development league. You used to have
all of the movies of the week and the different series, but now there
are fewer movies of the week and there are fewer series. Every night, we
got reality programs. Even on the cable networks," said the actor, who
also appears in the newly released 'King's Ransom.'
Cross says there are two reality series that he's recently watched that
he enjoyed. "'American Idol' is a talent contest. Cool. 'Amazing Race,'
my girlfriend made me watch that [recently], but it was cool," he
confessed. Cross' problem with all of the other shows? "A lot of these
other shows is just watching people whine. I don't like people whining
during the best of times. So I'm supposed to sit there on my valuable
time and watch people whine and bicker with each other. Not my thing,"
he concluded.
Idol Drama
Just before May sweeps, television's most successful reality series
'American Idol' is set to be hit with a major scandal. Details of ABC's
expose on 'American Idol <

being kept mum.
Nonetheless, Daily Variety is reporting that insiders at Fox say that
ABC News has been on the phone for comment and suggests it is examining
the relationships between judges and contestants on 'Idol.' My sources
tell me that the scandal is multi-layered and deeper than just that.
Additionally, Globe magazine is reporting that Corey Clark, a
24-year-old former contestant from season two, is claiming that he had a
"secret affair" with 42-year-old 'Idol' judge Paula Abdul

ABC's investigative report on 'Idol' is slated to air on Thursday, April
28.
Can't Say Names...
...What popular television personality is so tired of their executive
producer telling them how to run their show that they plan to buy out
the producer's interest in their show at the end of this season? This
long brewing feud has been going on since season one of the show, but
sources close to the situation say that tensions are now at an all-time
high.
Buzzworthy
... Last Wednesday night, Smooth magazine held its annual Hollywood
Issue party at the hot spot The Forbidden City. Recent cover girls
Stacey Dash, Elise Neal, Kenya Moore, Reagan Gomez-Preston, Farrah
Franklin and Playboy playmate Nicole Narain attended. The soiree, which
also commemorated the birthday of BV Buzz columnist Jawn Murray,
attracted the likes of Chris Rock, Bill Maher, Omarosa
Manigault-Stallworth, Tyson Beckford, Shar Jackson, Bryce Wilson,
Karrine "Superhead" Steffans, Carl Anthony Payne ('Martin'), Busta
Rhymes, Rolonda Watts, Bishop Don "Magic" Juan and Roger Cross ('24').
... After taking some time off from the music industry to get married,
Coko of SWV

in the studio working on solo material and slated to make guest
appearances on several upcoming CDs. The statuesque singer will be
featured on the sophomore album of Philly-bred trombone player Jeff
Bradshaw <

(Hidden Beach). There's also buzz that Coko has recorded a remake of a
Rene & Angela classic on the upcoming solo debut of Blackstreet

Chauncey Hannibal. Lastly, Coko will also be featured on a new track on
the upcoming live recording of gospel group Brent Jones & T.P. Mobb. She
sang the hit single 'Midnight' on the group's last album 'Beautiful. '
...Singer-actor Marques Houston
<
http://music.channel.aol.com/artist/...artistid=88071> is
featured on a billboard in New York City's Times Square for the clothing
line South Pole. While most celebrities would love to see their likeness
in a larger-than-life advertisement in the Big Apple, they still want
their name spelled correctly. On the bottom of the South Pole
advertisement, the 'Cuts' star is identified as "Marcus Houston."
Did You Know?
That before VH1's 'Strange Love' went off the air and Brigitte Nielsen
got married, Karu F. Daniels talked with Flavor Flav about just how
strange their love really was?

and 'CSI: NY' star Hill Harper

are slated to star in the independent horror flick 'The Breed.' The film
follows five young friends who vacation on a peaceful deserted island
only to discover that the canines they befriend are genetically altered
and possess a frighteningly high level of intelligence and an appetite
to match. Wes Craven ('Scream') will executive produce the film (which
means it won't be an indie project for long) that will shoot in South
Africa.
