But don't you know that just because they're in the South doesn't mean they're older than the existing southern ones and that who is better isn't based on whether they're southerly southern but whether they're northerly southlike and considering how fast the wind changes from north to south they can be popular there too especially since the north doesn't have an oil spill.

What if you go through deb before college? I had mine at 16 and my cousin had hers right after she turned 18. It was a range of girls from 16-20, 16 being the youngest you could be.

I believe most of the ones making the papers are the events you participate in at 20-21. The majority of these girls participate in more than one ball. Most of the time anything under that is called "sub-deb", at least where I come from. (We also had "lead outs" in high school which were open to any girl in the community. They are different from debutante balls in that daddy isn't involved but otherwise, same concept. Everyone is escorted down the runway one by one and your name is called out. Is that the kind of thing you're talking about?)

If you had it alone (as in the event was held specifically for you), it's usually called a "coming-out party".

My dad did escort me, I was presented to society and the women who were 20 were presented as women because they weren't teenagers. Some girls around here do have several balls at 18 and 20 to represent both changes in life. These weren't open to just anyone nor were we chosen as some are based on community envolvement if that makes sense. I did cotillion in 5th and 6th grade which alot of girls have to complete to be a deb and then during deb we took classes on how to wear high heels and to fix a flat. It was about equal number of girls that were in hs and just graduated.

ps we also had a deb coterie but with guys as our escorts but that wasn't our ball just a party.

Hmmmm I'm not familiar with this set up since I never heard the 18 year old balls referred to as debutante balls, but different areas/regions/cities have different traditions, especially north vs. south. It's actually all kind of interesting since a lot of the older balls have some really cool histories, and every area has its own version.
