Just wing it (but hang onto those directions!)

My situation: I want into a class that's technically full but not everyone is likely to show up. The teacher said to come to the first class. Coming to the first class means driving 40 minutes to and from.

Do I email him back and try to get him to commit to adding me? (he's the dept. head, he can do it)
or
Suck it up and show up to class

I guess Starbucks since I don't know what the other one is. I don't think I've ever seen a Caribou Coffee in California where I live.
