I do not buy their recordings, nor do I attend their live performances. There are Black comedians out there who do not do racial jokes and they are whom I support financially.

In the grand scheme of things this is an issue of white privilege and the reason many of the members of this board don't understand why a black person would get upset by the "Most Ghetto" award is an example of such. They have the privilege of opting out of any form of injustice or oppression that is perpetrated against any other non-white.
|
The reality is this: White people have privledge in the world. It's a fact we must all face. The sooner we all face it, the sooner we can fix the problem. For all those people complaining about Black comedians making racial jokes, I say get a clue. Have you even looked at the world around you?
Also, on joking: Listen, whoever said that thing about a Black comedian making Black jokes to a Black audience, you're on point about saying it's okay. I don't care if they make jokes about white people, at all, because being white, those jokes can bounce off your chest. As the one person said "the real joke is on you" or something. Because being white, you don't have to worry about that joke being a reality or a product of racial injustice towards you.
Everyone just needs to open up a little bit and see things from other people's perspectives. Then maybe we wouldn't have this damn thread.

You are not the mouthpiece for the caucasian race so as long as you realize that jokes don't bother YOU and others can be bothered, fine.
No joke bothers me as long as the intent isn't malevolent.

Way to live by your principles. And that's fine. But I hope you don't judge people that do. But then again, we all judge don't we?
My only purpose in these posts is to try and get people to think about intentions - how they haven't been offended in the past by comedians who didn't have bad intentions and how a couple girls here may not have meant for anyone to be upset and offended.
These girls are guilty of exposing their sorority to unnecessary risk for sure, but I'm not sure I would go so far as to say they are racist or ignorant even. There are bigger fish to fry with those labels.

You have verbalized my thoughts. I can crack jokes on 'the man'. The man can get upset, but will shake it off as I have no real power to harm. If the man were to crack a joke on me, much more has to be taken into consideration.

All i can say
It never seems to amaze me about some individuals when it comes to race. the statement that was put out by the sorority chi omega was way out of line, and being a founder of a multicultrual fraternity really makes me upset because every time we try to makes efforts as African Americans in this country its always someone or some people trying to put us 2 steps back. its always a stigma attach to us as black people. I heard the statement on TV two white girls who said "ooh my gosh thats soo ghetto", and it really upset me because they dont know what ghetto means but because we as a cultural use it they think its okay to us it and then us it out of content. Okay what im trying to say is We shouldnt constently have to justfiy words that we use to other cultures like the N word( which by the way should not be use at all), ghetto etc... basically if u dont know what the hell it means then dont use it at all. Fun or no fun stick to what u know.. Point Blank. So to my chi omegas out there remember and other people as well " When in doubt shut yo mouth".... GOD Bless u all....
Sincerely,

Does anyone GO to Kent???
As a journalist for the Daily Kent Stater, which published this story originally, I'd like to defend minority affairs reporter Bryan Wroten. As far as I know, NO Kent students were confused about this article. Perhaps you don't understand the specifics because you don't go here? This was in the KSU paper, NOT a wire story. This story catered to KSU students, NOT the general Greek world.
I understand my comment isn't in regards to the actual event, (which I do think is appalling) but as a journalist for the school where it occured, I don't think I ought to comment.
I do, however, think you should read the story carefully and consider that if you don't go to Kent, parts of this automatically aren't going to be clear to you. Bryan's an excellent, respected reporter. Please don't be so hasty to accuse him of bad writing skills when it's you who's not taking the time to understand.

Yes, well constructed sentences seem to be your paper's calling card.

Yeah, give her a break. It's rare that a journalist, or even a colleague of a journalist takes the time to defend their articles on an internet message board.
Respond to the points she makes, not her grammar and punctuation.

The "journalist" probably would have more credibility if she took the time to make sure her post wasn't reflective of her colleague's writing skills.
One cannot blame utealum for simply pointing out what many other GCers were probably thinking after reading that post.

Re: All i can say
Yep, its always someone else's fault when it comes to Black people's problems. I'm going to catch alot of shit for this post...but I really don't care....mainly because I find comments like yours hilarious. I've got news for you bud, you aren't the only race that uses the term "ghetto." If you find it offensive when you hear people use the term "_____is so ghetto," then maybe you should consider that the way in which people perceive it is only influenced and precipitated by mainly members of the black community. Watch BET or MTV for fucks sake. Hell, I saw an MTV Cribs show that had two rappers that lived in shithole houses in the "ghetto" because they said it gave them a sense of their roots. The whole show all they talked about was ghetto this and ghetto that....and how wonderful it was to be living amongst "their people." Well hmmmm.....maybe that could have had something to do with how people invision it. Maybe you should stop whining and realize that the people or person who is "trying to put you two steps back" are infact some of your own. It gets pretty annoying hearing certain people on this thread bitch and moan constantly about bigotry and racism (caugh-starang21-caugh) when a majority of the problem lies within your own race.

Geez
You guys are really malicious. I'm surprised to see that from a moderator. And anyways, I said I was at work, and I went back and corrected everything. Even journalists are allowed a round of copy-editing or two.
No wonder Greeks get such a bad rap, guys. It's shameful to see everyone being so nasty over little things.
