Doctor throws 2 kids, self off balcony
DAVID FISCHER
Associated Press
MIAMI BEACH, Fla. - Qinuo Van Dyk heard one of her children screaming from an adjacent room at a landmark South Beach hotel, walked into the room and saw her husband jump off the 15th-floor balcony, police said.
She looked over the railing and saw her husband and two young children lying on a mezzanine roof at the Loews Hotel about two floors above the ground.
Dr. Edward Van Dyk, 43, tossed his 4- and 8-year-old sons to their deaths Saturday morning, Miami Beach Police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said. Authorities did not release the boys' names.

Disabled 3 yr old left in closet to die while foster parents attend family reunion
Prosecutor: Tape-wrapped boy left in closet to die
POSTED: 1:01 p.m. EDT, August 30, 2006
CINCINNATI, Ohio (AP) -- The foster parents of a disabled 3-year-old boy wrapped him like a cocoon and left him for two days in a closet, where he died while they attended a family reunion, a prosecutor said.
The couple made several attempts to burn Marcus Fiesel's body and concocted an elaborate sham to cover up the boy's death, Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said Tuesday.
"Marcus was wrapped in a blanket and wrapped in tape with his arms behind him -- and this was not the first time," Deters said in announcing additional indictments against Liz and David Carroll Jr.

Son gets marijuana for doing homework
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A woman admitted to smoking marijuana daily with her 13-year-old son to reward him for completing his homework. Amanda Lynn Livelsberger, 30, pleaded guilty to several charges Monday and will be sentenced Nov. 27.
Livelsberger, of Conewago Township, admitted in Adams County court that she had been smoking marijuana with her son since he was 11, and that she often gave it to him as a reward.
The boy told police that he was required to do his homework as soon as he got home from school, and then was allowed to smoke marijuana with his mother, according to court documents.

This is crazy to me. Is being a foster parent that lucrative? I always hear the comment that people become foster parents for the check. Money hungry azzez.

I was talking to a Soror yesterday whose friend (also a Soror) is a social worker. How about Social Worker Soror's co-worker had a client who the judge specifically said DO NOT SEND THIS KID back to the parents. What does coworker do? She tells foster parents we will still send you the check but she put the kids back with the parents.

So sad.
My child advocacy professor and I were talking about a case in Newark, NJ where the foster parents were starving four boys. The oldest was 18 years old and only weighted 48 pounds. They had children of their own but they were fine. Nothing but being sick in the head can explain why people do things like this.

MONTREAL - Sentencing arguments will begin in November for a woman who followed in the footsteps of Lorena Bobbitt, the Virginia woman who gained infamy in 1993 for slicing off her husband's penis.
Andree Rene's weapon of choice was fondue fuel.
Following an argument in April, 2001, the woman set her boyfriend's penis on fire as he slept.
The 52-year-old man suffered third-degree burns in the pelvic area and on his chest. He spent a month in hospital.
Rene was found guilty of aggravated assault last year.
Sentencing arguments begin Nov. 21.
It's not clear why so much time elapsed between conviction and sentencing.
The maximum sentence is 14 years in prison.
The Crown attorney said he will ask for a jail term, but wouldn't elaborate on how many years in prison he will seek.
Rene remains free on bail until sentencing.
Legal analyst Steven Slimovitch said Rene could avoid a jail sentence, unless she acted with premeditation

Hearing stuff like that fuels my desire to be a foster parent someday. I've always wanted to adopt or serve as a foster parent because every child derserves the feelings of security, love, and just knowing that someone is definitely in their corner. The check has nothing to do with my ambition that I've had for a few years now.

Mom Jailed Because Of Son's Rotten Teeth
Woman Thought Teeth Would Just Fall Out
POSTED: 8:16 am EDT September 14, 2006
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania mother is behind bars because, police said, her son's lack of dental care was her fault.
Survey: Poor Dental Care: Abuse?
According to a local dentist, the 5-year-old boy has just eight teeth left and will need to be on a special soft food diet. The dentist said the child's tooth decay was so severe, it was criminal, and police agreed.
Dr. Nicholas Prusack said the nerves are exposed in several places.
"This is the X-ray showing the rotted teeth of the 5 year-old victim, and 12 of them so infected they had to be pulled," Prusack said.
Investigators said the damage was the result of the boy having never seen a dentist.
Now, his mother, 43-year-old Erneida Resto of Bethlehem, Pa., is charged with endangering her son's welfare.
Northampton County, Pa., children and youth services began investigating Resto in February when she took her son to a dental office in Salisbury Towsnhip, Pa.
That is where Prusack performed the surgery, saying the boy was in so much pain he could not eat.
"It is probably one of the worst cases," Prusack said.
Prusack was so concerned that he notified authorities, who said the boy had been complaining of headaches and pain in his mouth since the summer of 2005.
According to court documents, his mother said she knew her son was hurting, but did not take him to a dentist because she figured his baby teeth would fall out and the problem would fix itself.
Prusack said if he hadn't removed the boy's teeth he would likely have ended up in the hospital within six months.
He said the boy is now left with only six teeth on the bottom and two teeth on top and has a long road ahead.
"He's not going to have all of his permanent teeth, and for the next 10 years chewing food will be a problem for him," Prusack said.
Restohas been sent to Northampton County Prison under $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 22.
The boy is now in foster care, officials said.
