Yes, for thousands of reasons - good and bad. For example, if you're pretty certain the State failed to prove its case, you would almost never put the defendant on the stand, since they could presumably only screw things up.

I think it did, too. Plus, the fact that the jury released their verdict just before 10 pm on a Friday night? I don't ever remember that happening. It's like they thought, "he's guilty...let's get this over with and go home."

No defense lawyer in his right mind would have put Sandusky on the stand.

The Soup played a clip in which a legal expert said that Sandusky "shot his wad" by doing the Bob Costas interview. EXTREMELY unfortunate choice of words, but very correct.

On another note, I think the repainting of murals is ridiculous. If they (they = the college and the townspeople) had learned ANYTHING from this case, they would let the mural stand as it was, to remind them that just because you contribute in one spectrum that it doesn't make you perfect or above the law. Painting it over with a woman who no one will remember in 3 weeks who she is teaches NOTHING.

There were some parts of the Costas interview that didn't air, and those were even worse than the parts that did.

I think the guy is guilty as sin, and obviously so did the jury, but it's an interesting thought exercise to speculate on what would have happened with a really good defense lawyer.

Well, that's another theory that's going around....that the defense lawyer is purposely doing really stupid shit so the verdict can get thrown out on grounds of assy lawyering, or whatever the correct terminology is.

I don't think there is any chance of that. Sandusky chose and paid for his own lawyer, and I think that ineffective council is almost always someone appointed by the state. Further, Joe did more than the bare minimum a lawyer must do.

This is the part that sickens me the most. How could you witness this happening to a child and leave? How?

Exactly. I'd be flipping out, getting the child out of the situation as quickly as possible, and before telling anyone else, I'd find a phone and dial 911.

Even if I was freaked out at the time and simply ran to tell someone else within the university community, I'd be pretty pissed if nothing was done about it, and I'd sure as hell confirm that the news eventually made its way to the police.

Good.

Why is this even a question? Shouldn't they be cutting ties with everyone who had any knowledge of the crime, but didn't go far enough to stop it? If they don't, it seems like it would be a PR disaster.

This fella may not be a victim, but is admitting in this interview that Sandusky had inappropriate tendencies. I dont think this guy is ready to admit to himself that Sandusky is a dirty old man.

IMO, the media had a lot to do with it.

Look at the recent controversy as to whether or not Penn State should play in a Bowl game. Many have been rooting against them, and the media has been split as to whether they should attend games they're offered, or simply say, "No thanks."

The media hasn't given the team/school a break, and now Penn State won't give Penn State a break.

I think I said this earlier in the thread, but almost everything I've seen posted about this has been "Why did Penn State let this happen?" as opposed to "Why did Sandusky do this?"

Even though I disagree with piling on JoePa, it made some sense. Going after the school as a whole, though, is going too far IMO.
