THEY are idiots and now the whole chapter is suffering, which happens all the time when A FEW idiots do things in the name of our organizations and chapters.

I understand your point, but I'm just trying to support my sisterhood. If someone only reads a post or two of this entire thread I don't want them to think it was a chapter-sponsored award so I will continue to bring it up that is was NOT.

I'm sure if something was done in poor taste/with bad judgment by a few Deltas, you would want to be sure that people realized it wasn't all of you who knowingly participated.

Obviously Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton and the D9 and whomever else are not making the news with talk about punishing these comedians.

I wonder why.

Well perhaps given that these comedians make jokes, it's harmless - sorta like this situation with a joke prize that was partly thought up by a black student. It may be "stupid" to you, but stupidity is subjective I guess.

Personally, I don't laugh at racial jokes--period. I find them offensive no matter who says them. As I do dead baby jokes. But that's just me.

Just some questions about this whole thing.

Was this non-member (the Zeta who reported the incident) the only person who spoke up about it? Did the chapter have a discussion about it? I am not trying to pry into their business but when a soror does something out of line, you pull them to the side and school them. What was the reaction of the audience when the award was announced? Was the award name on the program? If so, why was it still allowed to continue?

The answers to these types will determine whether this misguided act was acceptable in the climate of the chapter.

Ok people, lets all take a deep breath and jump off our soapboxes for just a second.

It's already a given that the award was insensitive. Arguing that it's ok on the basis that "turnabout is fair play" based on the musings of black comedians is logically flawed at its base level.

The problem here is that we're beginning to play a game of semantics that will get us nowhere in the grand scheme of this debate. Pulling out different nuances in racial banter between different people will not solve the greater problem of anyone's insensitivity towards another minority whether it be social, religious, or (in this case) racial.

In the grand scheme of things this is an issue of white privilege and the reason many of the members of this board don't understand why a black person would get upset by the "Most Ghetto" award is an example of such. They have the privilege of opting out of any form of injustice or oppression that is perpetrated against any other non-white.

To the Chi O who is defending her sisterhood: We understand that it's not the enitre chapter, just a case of a few people in the chapter that didn't think before they acted. I respect you standing up for your sisterhood.

Peace.

Do you condemn those comedians then? Without race a lot of comedians would be out of business, especially black ones.

And you're more than entitled to not laugh at those jokes and I won't judge you for it.

Pretty much! Happens all the time with any organization. It's unfortunate but things like this can't be swept under the rug.

And I would love to know how/why a chapter would think that was appropriate. Or why someone would want to associate their letters with such an award. But its over and done and I hope the chapter resolves their issues.

Nobody is saying turnaround is fair play. It's not an issue of 2 wrongs making it right.

Someone's intentions matter greatly. If this was a joke, just like countless other jokes that black and white comedians have made, and people of all colors laugh, it's strange that only this joke (made by both black and white people) upsets people.

hotghettomess.com is a great usage of the word ghetto. It's discussed with fondness in D9 forums.

Why especially black ones? You sound really nuts to me, right now. Nevermind. You are off topic anyway.
