Alpha Phi is an International sorority that is new to colonize at Bama. There aere many posts on this board regarding their colonization and I suggest using the search function: http://www.alphaphi.org/

That is what the heck it is.

Oh and I obviously know it is a sorority, I just keep seeing it in reference to Bama in this thread so I mistakenly thought I could ask.

Yeah their colony recruitment will take place after recruitment, which is going to be pretty exciting.

Thanks. I was just curious about that. I just looked on our national website and found the answer I was looking for. I had read it earlier when we were getting our rec packets together but had forgotten. As you said, it does vary by schools (just because of numbers) whether or not they get that first round invite.

I love this, from the Alpha Gamma Delta Legacy Policy:

"Legacies—Our special link between Alpha Gamma Delta’s past and future."

I also like very much how they have listed stepdaughters as a legacy. I know that Phi Mu began this years ago, and I was so impressed with that. While I don't have any stepchildren myself, I do have many friends that are very close to their stepdaughters. I think it's great that some sororities have gone to extra steps to not leave them out.

Does anyone know if chapters are obligated to invite legacies back to at least one round before they can be cut from their list?

Legacy policies vary by sorority. Ideally there are some courtesies extended to legacies depending on the policy (though they aren't guaranteed bids), but keep in mind that at some schools chapters may have so many legacies coming through that they could theoretically fill an entire pledge class with legacies, so they just cannot keep them all.

This is why we tell PNMs not to think that being a legacy means they're "a shoe-in" because at some big schools, there are ALOT of legacies.

It's a suggestion, to be tailored to the school. At schools where there are few legacies, (ie. the Northeast) it is pretty common to invite all of your legacies back for round 2, no matter how terrible of a fit they may be with your chapter, as a courtesy to the relative, and because you can. My chapter does, but the most legacies we've had going through in recent years was 6. One of my friends who is in a sorority at Virginia Tech said they had "a lot" of legacies go through in 2007. When I asked how much "a lot" was, she said, "Oh, like 12." Quota is usually 30-40s there.

At SEC schools and other competitive schools in the South, the policy is unreasonable. If a chapter has more legacies than quota (ie the chapter at Bama rumored to have 200), it would be unfair to outstanding non-legacies. I'm purely speculating, but maybe they release a certain percentage of non-legacies and a lower percentage of legacies to get to the required number of cuts per Panhellenic.

I really hate when people tell you to use the "search feature" on this site because the stupid thing doesnt work unless ALL words contain at least 4 letters!!! So sometimes using the search feature doesnt work at all! I cant type in Phi Mu both words are less than 4 letters and all words in the search must be 4 letters or more.

A good way to search through posts is to use Google's Advanced Search.

Type in whatever you want to search, and then under domain, type www.greekchat.com

You'll be able to find what you're looking for.

OTW,
Thank you for the good advice. I have had problems with the search feature in the past. This will make it so much easier.

Until this board's software can develop a better search engine, John should totally disable it and have a message saying "this search engine sucks, just do a Google search and save yourself a headache". Maybe we can convince him to do that.
