More Maia: Most know actress Maia Campbell for her role as “Tiffany Warren” on the sitcom “In The House” which starred LL Cool J. Maia is also the daughter of author Bebe Moore Campbell. Since “In The House” wrapped, Maia has become a video girl, appearing in music videos for Tyrese (“Sweet Lady”, “Lately”), Jaheim (“Just In Case”), and Fat Joe (“What’s Luv”). She is also featured in the straight-to-video release “The Luau” which also stars Brian Hooks (“3 Strikes”, “Phat Beach”) and Troy Winbush (“John Q”, “Diary Of A Sex Addict”). Last week, I featured a quote Maia gave King magazine about relationships in the “Things That Make You Say Hmm?” section, but after re-reading the article, I felt as though there were some other things I needed to share. I think King’s Editor-in-Chief Datwon Thomas described Maia best as, “A lil’ off.” In the King article, Maia was asked “What was it really like ‘In The House?” Said Maia: “LL Cool J – never slept with him. Okay, it’s finalized. Angie Stone’s third single “More Than A Woman” – which was originally recorded with her ex-beau Calvin Richardson – has now been re-recorded with R&B crooner Joe and will be shipped to radio shortly. At one point, the song was going to be reworked with Angie’s labelmate Tyrese, but the tune was redone with Joe instead. “Me and Joe have great chemistry so we just went in and knocked it out,” said Stone. Angie is currently on the “BK Got Music Summer Tour” with Luther Vandross, Gerald Levert, and Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child.


~ Pop trio Blaque, which were protégés of the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, are now signed to Rodney Jerkins’ Darkchild label. Blaque was originally signed to Columbia Records who dropped the group early this year. The debut on Darkchild will be the first release for the Jerkins label through Cash Money Records. (CT4's comments WTF) The deal calls for Jerkins to release four additional acts through Darkchild/Cash Money/Universal.

~ Oscar winner Cuba Gooding, Jr. is in Atlanta filming “The Fighting Temptations” which stars Steve Harvey, Beyonce’ Knowles, Angie Stone, and Rue McClanahan of “Golden Girls” fame. The film is scheduled to be released in 2003. ME AGAIN -- uuuuuuum I don't even much know what to say. I am reminded of Kingdom Come for some reason.

The tabloid is alleging that some drug lords hired a bar girl to trick Simpson into talking about the 1994 killing. They claim the girl was wired and that Simpson was high. LOL. Now, having those "financial managers" is what got Toni and other folks in trouble. Remember, Oprah gave someone the advice to handle your OWN affairs. This is probably why Diana is STILL worth $77 million. (It didn't hurt the fact that she married BIG this last time either.)

(Aug. 5, 2002) *Our man in Jamaica, Kevin Jackson, reports that Ashanti made her debut performance in the island nation recently, at Reggae Sumfest's International Night.
The reggae festival featured performances from Bob Marley's son Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, (this year's Grammy award winner for Best Reggae Album), as well as Ja Rule and other reggae acts.

Ashanti was disappointing to say the least. Not only CAN'T she dance, but girlfriend really can't sing, Jackson said. A lot of press folks have been bitching and asking, "What's all the hype on this sister, if she can't deliver?" After 3 songs, she left the stage. Her labelmate Ja Rule delivered the goods and had the crowd begging for more.

The following night, Ashanti and Ja Rule performed at the annual beach bash Fully Loaded, in St. Catherine, where Ja Rule energized the crowd with his hits. Ashanti again was a disappointment, however, the crowd seemed to appreciate her song "Foolish" more than anything else.

In other Ashanti news, the singer has spoken out about her sexy photos and posters. She told German magazine Speigel Online, "I find sexy pictures erotic. And I love it when men find me erotic and I can boost their sex lives through my pictures... Why not?" she said. "Sex is not a bad thing, after all."

Government reportedly can link Webber to booster

DETROIT -- Federal prosecutors are expected to seek charges against Sacramento Kings star Chris Webber on charges he lied to a grand jury about his dealings with a University of Michigan basketball booster, sources have told The Detroit News.


A grand jury could be asked to indict Webber as early as Wednesday on charges of making a false declaration before a grand jury on Aug. 2, 2000, the newspaper reported Tuesday.


It quoted unidentified sources familiar with the investigation.


If convicted, the former Michigan and Detroit Country Day standout could face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. It is unclear how many counts Webber would face in an indictment.


A message left with Gina Balaya, spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Detroit, was not immediately returned late Monday night.


Kings spokesman Troy Hanson said he had not heard about any possible indictment and declined further comment.


In May, former Michigan booster Ed Martin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder monetary instruments.


Martin, 68, admitted he took gambling money, co-mingled it with earned income and money given to him from another person, then loaned it to at least four players while they were still amateurs.


Martin said he paid $280,000 to Webber; $160,000 to Robert Traylor, now with the Charlotte Hornets; $105,000 to Maurice Taylor, now with the Houston Rockets; and $71,000 to Louis Bullock, who is playing professionally in Europe.


Martin's attorney, William Mitchell III of Troy, said Webber's indictment was "a distinct possibility -- Mr. Webber and several others.''


Traylor and Bullock admitted receiving the loans when they testified in front of the grand jury, said their attorney, Steve Fishman.


"They didn't lie to the grand jury. They didn't commit any crime. They may have committed an NCAA violation, but they have nothing to worry about,'' Fishman said Monday.


Chicago Bulls and former Michigan player Jalen Rose also said in May that he took "pocket money'' from Martin.


After Martin's indictment, Webber publicly denied taking significant amounts of money from Martin and said the government's charges were inaccurate.


"Mr. Webber probably needs to consult with counsel before he makes any further statements,'' Martin's attorney said.


Among the government's evidence that Webber was not truthful with the grand jury are detailed financial records that suggest Webber repaid Martin about $40,000, the newspaper reported.


"The government believes they may have some information to that end,'' Mitchell said.


On May 28, Martin testified that he gave Webber -- whose full legal name is Mayce Edward Christopher Webber III -- about $280,000 in cash and gifts and that he paid for other college expenses.


Webber, 29, who led the Michigan basketball team dubbed the "Fab Five'' for its starting freshmen lineup in 1991, was the first pick in the 1993 National Basketball Association draft.

This sort of stuff has been going on for YEARS!!! Why them? Why now? Those guys have been out of college for x amount of years. The money that they received is pocket change to them now. Instead of worrying about how these high school/college ballplayers are getting money, they need to worry about things like why they get to play basketball a few nights out of the week, travel to exotic places, and make millions and billions of dollars while there are people that work HARD everyday (teachers, police officers, etc.) and get paid at the bottom of the pile-- with NO bonus.
