TDS,
My daughter was choosing between IU and another school with a strong, but traditional greek system. Given that she really wanted to be a member of a sorority like her sister and me, she decided on the other school. I agree with you, IU is a horrible system.

I could rant about that blog for days, but I will make one succinct comment. Posting on a blog not affiliated with Indiana University will change nothing. If that many people want to see a change, they will have to go directly to the source.

If you maximize your options at IU, chances are fairly high that you will get a bid. That does NOT mean dropping because you got back 4 chapters you didn't like, that means sticking it out through pref round. A very small number of girls go all the way through pref and don't match. The rest self-select out because they don't want to be in a 'bottom tier' chapter.

Do you know the actual numbers? Oh, if every big school could spell it all out, black and white, like Illinois does, a LOT of misconceptions could be cleared up.

Click on recruitment, then click on statistics and there are numbers published for last year and the year before.

196 participating in pref and not getting bids? That number seems too high!! I would be heartbroken.

To help out others:
2012:
1,720 women registered
890 received bids
252 women were not matched throughout the process
74 released for grades
196 participated in preference round and did not receive bids
504 withdrew themselves from recruitment
Nearly 52% of women registered joined chapters
Average chapter size is 156
These numbers do NOT help in alleviating fears. More than 10% of the girls who register make it all the way to preference and don't get a bid? That's horrendous. And 15% got cut through the week, not including drops or grades? Yikes! Hopefully with the addition of ASA and TPA, those numbers were helped a little, but the withdrawal number might also increase as a result (nothing wrong with them, but the lack of house is going to cause some detractors from the girls who only want the huge house, live in 3 years experience).

That is the number I find completely unacceptable. This is just so wrong.

It's not clear how many of those 196 SIP'ed, though, is it?
It's still a problem, but even down the block at U of I, there are a large number of women who SIP and go bidless.

And the problem is that the IU culture is ALL about the living in experience. This is the number one reason they give for not changing the way they do things. And yet they expect other groups to come on and not have housing. Hopefully ASA and TPA know something we don't because bringing on unhoused chapters on a campus that revolves around housing seems a huge risk.

^^^^Thanks for those horrendous numbers! To put it another way, of all the girls who went to pref round, 18% of them did not receive a bid. Hopefully this year was better, though a friend of my daughter went to 2 houses yesterday and did not receive a bid today. Lets hope BEG has a much happier ending.

Yes, TDS 196 is unacceptable, however there are a majority of current Greek women who want it that way. The chapters have been given the statistics and know that if they would allow live outs or do away with bed rush, this number would go WAY down. AND THEY DON'T CARE. They vote both ideas down each year. They vote to allow extension because it does not affect them, they know that new chapters will remain unhoused and therefore they feel new chapters are no competition. If there is going to be change at IU, it must come from IU the institution. IU must decide to force that change by refusing to recognize organizations that do not allow live outs or allow bed rush. Until one of the two (IU PHA chapters or IU) decides a change is needed, it won't happen. And we all know, barring an act of God, it's not going to happen.
Anyone have a gif of a dead horse?
