Ah... thanks for clarification.

I was worried about those evacuating and being stuck on a freeway while Rita hit. But at least they are some distance away now... though stuck in traffic still.

Just got to chat with my CBS pal in Houston. He was at Home Depot picking up buckets.

I didn't ask...

He said, though, that there was a line and they were only letting people in about ten at a time to keep control of things there might be run on.

Lots of stuff you just don't think of.

From the Associated Press...

"NEW ORLEANS (Sept. 23) - Hurricane Rita's steady rains sent water pouring through breaches in a patched levee Friday, cascading into one of the city's lowest-lying neighborhoods in a devastating repeat of New Orleans' flooding nightmare."

Here we go again. Tried to reach my friend working for FOX in NO this morning, but no answer.

I really don't think San Antonio is in danger... They are pretty much just south of Austin, and we only have a 20% chance of rain tomorrow.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to get Tom a map. lol. I'm about 5 hours (when not in a botched evacuation) from Port Arthur.

San Antonio is completely packed with people. I've never seen so many people here at once. Gov. Perry said 2.7 million evacuated. If only 20% came to San Antonio, that would mean we have half a million people in hotel rooms, with families and at shelters. I've seen vehicle after vehicle from houston on the road. At public places like the mall, I've seen people with SA roadmaps, and everybody knows someone who is staying with friends here from Houston.

Should make for a crowded weekend.

I talked to one of my sisters this morning. She's staying in Sugar Land. Her sister is 35 weeks pregnant, and advised not to go anywhere...since she's already on bed rest. My husband's bro called and they made it to College Station where they're staying put.

Also, talked to my cousin. She teaches in Rockwall (a suburb of Dallas), there were FIST FIGHTS at Wal-Mart, because they ran out of water. She said she had to laugh, because a customer was crying to the cashier, "What were they going to do without water?" The cashier told her, "Why don't you go home and put some from your tap into jugs?" People just get hysterical and cease normal thinking processes! Talke to my dad too. He and his woman are hunkered down for the weekend. He said it's a little windy, but not much else going on 'cept for the crazies in town!

Here in "Wide Awake Wylie", Texas (east of Dallas), we're getting a steady northeasterly breeze from the outer bands of Rita; sunset today was an amazing display of high clouds, again courtesy of Rita.

Getting gas in the Dallas area? Hit or miss. The cheaper-priced gas stations all ran outta gas, some of the larger oil companies still had some. Siege mentality has taken over some stores, though it wasn't as bad today as was yesterday. The last-minute turn will probably cause us to dodge the bullet, but I expect the Piney Woods of East Texas and the Ark-La-Tex to get pissed on hard by what's left of Rita this weekend.

Yesterday in the Fort Worth area, it was seriously the best day to go golfing. It was maybe 85 degrees, cloudy and there was a nice breeze.

Today in the DFW area it's pretty nice again as well. I think the Dallas area probably got some rain... around 6 PM I saw a bunch of fast moving "bands" of clouds that were really dark & scary. They didn't hit the west side of the DFW metroplex though.

Yesterday along those TxDot signs there were phrases like "Heavy traffic on routes to Houston. Travel discouraged" flashing all over the metroplex.

I hope the Houston folks get home safely! It looks like a bunch of Houstoners (?) will be headed back in the next few days.

We got lots of clouds from Rita's feeder bands and some wind, but zip in rainfall amounts here in "Wide Awake Wylie". I think Greenville was about the farthest west any serious rain and wind fell out here from Rita.
