TEACHER AND 'MY HEROES'

[Heritage High Spanish teacher Debbie Shultz spends time Friday morning with some of the students who saved her from a knife attack this week. On national TV, Heritage teacher, her 'guardian angels' describe stabbing attack

By BEN SMITH and DONNA LEWIS WILLIAMS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

The heroes of Heritage High School went national Friday morning with their bandaged teacher, who praised the actions of "my guardian angels."

Two days after they rushed a man who tried to slash Spanish teacher Debbie Shultz with a knife, six Rockdale County teens and Shultz were featured on two national morning news programs.

Andy Anderson, Matt Battaglia, Nimesh Patel and Scott Wigington, all 17, and John Bailey and Austin Hutchinson, both 16, appeared from Conyers with teacher Debbie Shultz on ABC's "Good Morning America and the CBS "Early Show."

The students went to Shultz's rescue Wednesday when her estranged husband, Theodore Shultz, allegedly burst into their classroom brandishing a knife. The kids disarmed the attacker and pinned him to the ground.

The teacher needed stitches for cuts on her leg and hand.

"For the first time I actually made my father proud," Patel laughed during the teens' "Early Show" appearance.

Debbie Shultz said that "I have no doubt I would have been killed," if "my heroes" had not intervened.

Theodore Shultz, 51, pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges of aggravated assault, aggravated stalking, cruelty to children, disrupting a school and carrying a weapon on school property.

The students recounted how they wrested the knife free from the attacker after she called for them to get help. Debbie Shultz said all 24 teens in her trailer played some part in a drama that was "frozen in time."

Scott Wigington was humble on the "Good Morning America" appearance, but conceded that being the son of Rockdale County Sheriff Jeff Wigington "probably" aided his actions.

For the students and Debbie Shultz, Friday included first appearing on national television and then taking or administering final exams.

That's not the only distraction facing the new heroes, who, before Wednesday's incident, just wanted to get through semester finals and out of school for Christmas.

The teens say they have been deluged was telephone calls from various news media outlets, showered with congratulations and high-fives from classmates and even given free concert tickets.

Steve McCoy and Vikki Locke of "The Steve and Vikki Morning Show" on STAR-94 radio heard about their heroics and wanted to reward the six teens, said Annamarie Sheets, marketing director for the radio station. Each youth got a pair of tickets to Saturday night's "Jingle Jam" concert, featuring the Barenaked Ladies, Maroon 5 and Sarah McLachlan, at the Arena at Gwinnett Center.

Shultz's attacker was able to walk directly into her classroom trailer outside Heritage High's main building. Rockdale school officials said Thursday they will look into new safety procedures for the trailers.

Damon Evans

First black AD in SEC was Dooley's choice

By MARK SCHLABACH
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

ATHENS -- University of Georgia officials will announce today that Damon Evans has been promoted to the school's new athletics director, two people close to the search process said Thursday.

UGA spokesman Tom Jackson confirmed Thursday that a news conference has been scheduled for today.

Evans, 34, would become the first African-American athletics director in the Southeastern Conference -- 16 days after Mississippi State University hired Sylvester Croom as the first African-American football coach in the SEC.

Evans would also be the youngest athletics director in the conference. He is less than half the age of Vince Dooley, 71, the former UGA head football coach who has spent the last 40 years in the university's athletics department and has been athletics director since 1979.

Evans also was considered Dooley's hand-picked successor. Bob Hope, a public relations specialist in Atlanta, said that was a factor in Dooley's asking UGA President Michael Adams in June to extend his contract two more years. Hope said Dooley felt that would be enough time for Evans to grow into the job.

But Adams denied Dooley's request, forcing Dooley to retire next June 30 -- and sparking a firestorm of controversy among the Bulldog faithful.

"I think that is just a stunningly positive announcement," said Hope, who was behind an Internet campaign to oust Adams. "I can't believe Michael Adams is going to hire Vince Dooley's protégé. I think it's a smart move. To some degree, it was the only move. I don't think anyone else would have been accepted by the Georgia people."

Evans, a native of Gainesville, has worked the past 5 1/2 years as senior associate athletics director under Dooley.

When he was approached by a Journal-Constitution reporter before Thursday night's basketball game in Athens and asked to confirm whether he was offered the job, he smiled and said: "All I can say is, you need to talk to Jere Morehead," referring to the head of the search committee.

Adams and Morehead could not be reached for comment Thursday night.

Adams interviewed three finalists -- North Carolina State athletics director Lee Fowler and Texas Christian athletics director Eric Hyman were the other two -- at a hotel near Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Wednesday.

Fowler, 50, withdrew from the UGA search Thursday morning after N.C. State offered him an extended contract and higher salary. Hyman, 52, was told Thursday afternoon that he was no longer under consideration for the job.

In a statement published on TCU's Web site Thursday night, Hyman said: "I was flattered to be considered. However, after talking with a representative from Georgia, I have notified our chancellor that I am no longer a candidate for the position."

The search committee appointed by Adams to find Dooley's successor also interviewed Florida associate athletics director Greg McGarity and former UGA football player Mark Lewis, who is vice president of Olympic sponsorships for General Electric.

Hope said Adams' decision to appoint Evans may appease some of the UGA president's critics.

"Vince really felt like he was sort of prepping and mentoring Damon into that job," Hope said. "Vince really worked hard to find the right person to succeed him, and he really felt Damon was that guy."

Dooley expressed those sentiments in a draft of a letter he planned to send to Adams last June. Dooley wrote: "One of the brightest, most capable young administrators in the country is already in place in our Athletic Department. Damon Evans is a loyal Bulldog who has all of the leadership qualities to not only sustain the great program we have, but also to take it to new heights. In fact, I considered Damon as a worthy successor and part of that succession plan was for me to stay on a few more years and give him more time to develop his skills. Despite the fact that plan fell through, I am convinced Damon is ready . . ."

Although the paragraph was omitted from the letter Dooley eventually sent to Adams, Dooley never wavered in his support of Evans. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution obtained the draft through open records laws.

Evans played wide receiver for the Bulldogs in 1988-92. He earned a bachelor's degree and master's in education from UGA. He returned to Athens in 1998 after working as assistant commissioner for eligibility and compliance services at the SEC for two years. He also was compliance director at the University of Missouri in 1994-95.

In what has turned out to be a nightmare two weeks for Detroit's most famous rapper after Benzino 'revealed Eminem's true colors' it seems that some even more sordid details of Eminem's (Real name Marshall Mathers) past have come back to haunt him.

A 34 year-old former Detroit resident, who asked to remain unnamed, yesterday admitted that he'd had a 'love affair' with the rapper 11 years ago. He showed grainy pictures of the two together and admitted that Eminem had given him a massive pay-off when he signed with Dr. Dre to stop his former partner from saying anything. The man also played some intimate tapes that Eminem had made for him; the Source are said to be ready to face bankcrupcy in order to get hold of them.

"Marshall, or 'Pumpkin' as I used to call him, was a very tender, very giving partner. He admitted that he felt comfortable with me, and that he'd finally stopped living in self-denial regarding his sexuality." The man admitted that Eminem had chosen to keep their relationship a secret, and ended the relationship when one of his friends found out. He also said that one member of D12 was aware of the affair, but refused to say who.

The man also stated that Eminem had continued to call and meet with him until 1999, often for sex. Asked if he knew of any other homosexual affairs Eminem may have had, the man stated "None that I know of." Asked if their relationship had been solely sexual, the man replied; "No, we expressed our love for each other in several ways; verbally and sexually. Pumpkin was very much in love with me, as I was with him." Asked why he chose to expose Eminem, he said "I don't see it as exposure. I genuinely believe that I'm rescuing his life; because he is in denial of his true self."

The man accepted no money for the interview.
Remember the Scottie Pippen story? This sounds like some foolishness. I want to see the pictures and this "anonymous" person myself.

Al Gore's Son Arrested for Marijuana Possession

Albert A Gore, III, is shown in this 1999 file photo.

WASHINGTON (Dec. 20) - The son of former vice president and 2000 Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore has been charged with marijuana possession.

Albert A. Gore III, 21, was arrested Friday night after he was stopped for driving a vehicle without its headlights on.

Two passengers were also arrested and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. They were identified as Yann V. Kumin, 21, and Marc G. Hordon, 22, both of Cambridge, Mass.

A Montgomery County, Md., police officer stopped the car, a dark-colored Cadillac, in Bethesda, a Washington suburb, around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

The officer noticed the car's windows and sunroof were open, despite cold temperatures Friday night. There was also a smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle, according to a news release from the police department.

A search of the vehicle turned up a partial marijuana cigarette, a cigarette box containing suspected marijuana, and a soft drink can that also smelled of marijuana.

All three were released pending trial.

In September 2002, the younger Gore was ticketed for driving under the influence. He was pulled over and ticketed by military police just outside Fort Myer in suburban Virginia, but was not taken into custody.

In the summer of 2000, Gore was cited by the North Carolina Highway Patrol for driving 97 mph in a 55-mph zone. Under an agreement with prosecutors, a reckless driving charge was dropped in the North Carolina case, but he was fined $125 for speeding and his driving privileges in the state were suspended.

Miss Savannah charged with shooting boyfriend

Associated Press

SAVANNAH -- A Georgia beauty queen is accused of shooting her boyfriend, possibly during a fight over another woman, police said.

Miss Savannah Sharron Nicole Redmond, 21, was charged with aggravated assault after the Tuesday night incident and released on bail Wednesday. The charge could be upgraded to murder if the man she is accused of shooting, 25-year-old Kevin Shorter, dies, police said.

Shorter was listed in critical condition Thursday at Memorial Health University Medical Center, said hospital spokeswoman Sandy Griffin.

The circumstances of the shooting are still sketchy, but police said it occurred at a home belonging to the father of another woman Shorter was dating.

As Shorter left the home, he and Redmond started arguing, investigators said. Shorter was shot in the lower abdomen, and then he ran back into the house and collapsed.

Redmond fled the scene and was arrested later at her home, police said.

A high school teacher, Redmond graduated summa cum laude from Spelman College in Atlanta after completing a double major in English and pre-medicine in three years, according to the Miss Savannah Web site. She was in the process of getting her master's degree in education.

Redmond assumed the Miss Savannah title in August when Andrea Bailey -- who was originally crowned Miss Savannah -- won the title of Miss Georgia and went on to compete in the Miss America competition. Redmond also was pursuing a singing career.

Redmond couldn't immediately be reached for comment Thursday.

Question Justin Timberlake A Racist?/Source Can`t Distribute Tape

Monday, Dec 22, 2003, 12:17 pm EST

Justin Timberlake A Racist?
World Entertainment News Network

-----------------------------

JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE`s former bodyguard has leapt to the singer`s defence amid allegations he is a racist - labelling the star "the blackest white boy I know".

KENNETH HUNTER, who was employed by Justin`s former band `N SYNC for four years until 1998, spoke out after former tour manager IBRAHIM DUARTE launched a $10.2 million (£6 million) lawsuit against the band, claiming he was the victim of racial abuse at their hands.

In his suit, Duarte claims, "After the band terminated the employment of security professional Kenneth Hunter, they made fun of the way Mr Hunter spoke and mimicked his accent in a racially offensive way."

But Hunter, who has stayed pals with Justin and even met up with him in Frankfurt, Germany last month, (NOV03), has rubbished these claims.

He says, "I never heard that. They never said anything derogatory about me. I got let go of because of political stuff between security and management. Justin`s whole security staff are basically black, even now. Any suggestion Justin is racist is an outright lie.

"There were no racial slurs or anything. I`ve always said he`s the blackest white boy I know. His characteristics, the way he sings, the whole soul vibe about him. I`ve never really witnessed a Caucasian person that had those characteristics. It`s also the people he hangs out with - he`s got a lot of black friends.

"I never heard him or any of the other band members say anything like `n*ggers`.

"Duarte`s a good tour manager. I`ll leave it at that. I`ve got nothing against him."

Source Can`t Distribute Tape
Associated Press

-----------------------------

NEW YORK - A court ruling has stopped hip-hop magazine The Source from distributing a CD of a previously unreleased recording by rapper Eminem that includes phrases such as "black girls are dumb."

Manhattan federal Judge Gerald Lynch granted Eminem`s lawyers an injunction preventing the magazine from enclosing the CD in its February issue, which goes on sale in mid-January. The magazine had planned extensive coverage of the recording.

The Source said it exposed the Eminem track while investigating the forces corrupting hip-hop, including racism.

"The fact that our opinion regarding the prevalence of racism in the music industry is being censored is just another step in the effort to cover up the racial bias destroying hip-hop culture," The Source said in a statement Thursday.

Eminem`s record company, Interscope Records, declined comment on the ruling.

Eminem`s lawyers had argued that distributing the CD violates copyright laws.

Last month, The Source held a news conference to accuse Eminem, who is white, of racism, citing lyrics on the recording such as "black girls are dumb, and white girls are good chicks."

The tape was provided to the magazine by "three white hip-hop fans from Detroit who were peers of Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, in the early `90s, at the time of the recording," the Source said last month.

The 31-year-old rapper has said the recording was "foolishness" that he`d made as a teen "out of anger, stupidity and frustration" after breaking up with a black girlfriend.

Besides winning several Grammys, Eminem won an Oscar this year for his song "Lose Yourself" from the film "8 Mile."
