Holy cow, I didn't realize how huge the DZ connection with the university was until I looked it up! I hope they can return soon.

And Tri Delta returning to UCLA is a hope I have at some point in the future, though I found out their house is being used as a home for foster kids in college!

Quotas

Is the use of the quota system for sororities only? I heard of it at the U of Vermont when I attended there 1958-1962. I joined the re-chartered Phi Mu Delta chapter and there were only 10 members then. During my tenure there at the university, we were fortunate if we had a total membership of 30. There were times at rush when we got only 1 new pledge. There was a sorority that appears not to have achieved their quota and was told by the then Dean of Women that they had to close their chapter. I never saw any fraternity close.

The quota system is exclusive to the National Panhellenic Council agreements.

The North American Interfraternity Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the National APIDA Panhellenic Association, and the National Multicultural Greek Council members do not have agreements on quota or chapter totals.

Phi Sigma Sigma at Cornell is closing due to low numbers. They're following on the heels of Phi Mu closing.

Cornell had a few closings in the early 2000s, with Chi Omega, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Alpha Omicron Pi all leaving around the same time.

Why do so many groups struggle at Cornell?

Cornell, in some ways, has a similar vibe to what could be found on a competitive campus in the south (and a recent thread here spoke of a recent recruitment experience there).

I am a Cornell alumna and my daughter is a current undergraduate. When I was an undergraduate in the 1980s, and shortly after, there were several colonizations in a short period of time, approximately one every two years. All of those organizations, including those you mentioned above, have closed. Phi Sigma Sigma and Phi Mu are more recent chapters, I believe both opened sometime in the 2010s. Most of the sororities at Cornell are long established chapters and those are not struggling. I believe only one organization that has opened since 1982 has prospered. It is the new chapters that struggle, they have successful colonies, then the chapters struggle after a short period of time when being the new group is no longer attractive. In my opinion, the question should be why it is difficult to establish a new group at Cornell.

Alpha Xi Delta is recolonizing at UGA fall 2023!

Quote:
It is with great excitement that National Council announces we have accepted an invitation to reestablish the Gamma Upsilon Chapter at the University of Georgia in the fall of 2023! Gamma Upsilon Chapter was founded in 1960 and provided the collegiate home for more than 290 Alpha Xi Delta members.

Such grand news, congratulations!

From the GC lists, it appears every NPC group that's ever been at UGA will be open once AXiD reinstalls.
