The oldest local sorority is Phi Nu, founded in 1853 at MacMurray College.

Oldest Local
Lambda Iota Fraternity founded at the University of Vermont in 1836, is the oldest local. It was offered by many nationals to become a chapter because of the character and traditions they represented however; the Society elected to stay local and maintains strong membership and all its traditions.

That's what I thought. I remember that from my time at UVM, before I transferred.

Though I wouldn't call it a fraternity in the sense you probably mean, the Jefferson Society (Phi Pi Theta) at Virginia was founded in 1825 and claims to be the oldest continually operating GLO in America. Apparently, Phi Beta Kappa is older but was disbanded at some point.

Lambda Iota was one of my (and my sisters) favorite houses to hang out at when I was at UVM!

Wisconsin's oldest local sorority is Alpha Sigma/ Aureolia Society founded in 1898 and is still an active chapter. The women of AS are the greatest.

Please be specific when saying "oldest sorority"... "oldest local sorority".
Have any of these locals gone on to have more chapters? That's pretty cool that they've stuck around for this long without national representation!

It wouldn't if you actually knew the members
Most at UofT think of them as a joke (particularlly if you've watched one of their alcohol fueled rituals... although their hazing is kinda funny in a "arty" way) - or just a way for people to be even more of an elitist in the elitist college here.

do you have any idea how they started.....?

some have "public" rituals, where it can be seen by anyone walking by, but the meaning is still veiled in some way. We have one such ritual.
All of the locals at OC have been around for 80+ years, one is approaching 100 quickly. None have expanded to other campuses.
