Mother locking girls in trunk of car--from Wash. Post
A mother driving from Alabama to Loudoun County forced two of her daughters, ages 8 and 10, to take turns riding in the trunk because the four-door sedan was cramped with three other passengers and a dog, authorities said yesterday.
Cheryl Ann Schoonmaker, 38, has been charged with abuse and cruelty to children for allegedly rotating the two girls in and out of the trunk of the Nissan Sentra during the July 1 trip, which took more than eight hours.
Schoonmaker was driving from Alabama, where she has relatives, to the Loudoun home of her ex-husband, the girls' father, said Kraig Troxell, spokesman for the Loudoun sheriff's office. Also riding in the car were the former couple's 12-year-old daughter, a 12-year-old family friend and an infant in a car seat.
"It's amazing to me what some people will consider doing to their children," Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney James E. Plowman said yesterday. "I don't understand -- they're children, not pets. Not that you would put your pet in the trunk. They're not cargo, I should say."
The incident was at least the third time in less than two months that local women have faced criminal charges after allegedly putting their children in car trunks. In June, a Frederick woman was charged with reckless endangerment after a police officer watched her help her 9-year-old son, her 3-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old friend into the trunk in a shopping mall parking lot. When the police officer pulled her over, the woman said the children had wanted to ride there.
Earlier this month, Tamatha Parker, 33, of Quantico was charged with child abuse after Fredericksburg authorities accused her of locking her two 5-year-old children in the car trunk as punishment for misbehaving in a store.
In the most recent case, Curtis Schoonmaker, the father of the three girls, said he was shocked when his daughters came to him the day after the July 1 trip and blurted out the conditions of their ride. He said that the children appeared unharmed but that the trip to Aldie "made them uncomfortable enough that they came to me and told me."
Schoonmaker said that he has custody of the three girls and that they had been visiting their mother for a five-day vacation. This was the first time they had ever told him about being put in the car trunk. However, he said that at other times, they told him about riding in overcrowded cars with their mother.
He said the girls told him that the 12-year-old family friend was allowed to ride in the car, as was the dog, a Boston terrier. "I don't think my feelings need an explanatory comment about that," he said.
He said that according to the daughters, the mother could have rented a larger car but chose the Nissan Sentra because it was cheaper. "She thought there was no problem with this," he said.
Cheryl Ann Schoonmaker apparently made some effort to ensure that the child riding in the trunk had air and light, Troxell said. He said the car had a back seat designed to fold down, allowing space for large packages in the trunk to extend into the passenger compartment. According to Troxell, Schoonmaker drove with the seat folded over so that there was an opening from the back seat into the trunk. Another child rode seated on the back of the collapsed seat.
Schoonmaker was arrested Friday and was charged with two felonies. Each charge is punishable by up to five years in prison. It could not be determined whether the other occupants of the car were wearing seat belts.
Plowman said the charges were appropriate, even though the children came through the incident unscathed.
"You're causing this child to be in danger. They're unrestrained in a hot, enclosed, dark environment with probably poor oxygen. If that car is in an accident, it would be extremely dangerous," he said.
Schoonmaker, who was released by a Stafford magistrate on $5,000 bond, could not be reached at her home. She will be arraigned in Loudoun Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Friday.

Police Give Man Amputated Foot Back
LAWRENCE, Kan. Jul 26, 2005 — Ezekiel Rubottom now has his left foot back exactly where he wants it in a bucket on the front porch. Police in Kansas have returned the amputated foot to him after seizing it during the weekend to check out just how it got there.
The 21-year-old man's foot was amputated three weeks ago after a series of medical problems, and he started keeping it in a five-gallon bucket filled with formaldehyde.
It came to the attention of police after a call from a parent whose child reported seeing the severed foot. Officers who went to the home late Saturday night found the foot, and some of Rubottom's friends, but no sign of Rubottom himself.
Unsure of what to make of the unusual discovery, police confiscated the severed foot and put it into evidence storage.
"We had to make sure that no crime had been committed," Sgt. Dan Ward said.
Rubottom, an artist, recovering methamphetamine addict and occasional hip-hop master of ceremonies, said he was born with a clubbed foot and has dealt all his life with pressure sores and infections. An infection this summer became so severe that doctors at Lawrence Memorial Hospital decided it should be amputated.
Rubottom asked to have the severed foot. A pathologist at the hospital checked to make sure it wouldn't be a hazard and told him he could have it, provided he kept it in a container labeled with instructions for handling the formaldehyde.
Karen Shumate, a vice president at the hospital, said people can keep parts removed from their bodies if they want them.
"They've had women that want their uterus," she said. "People take tonsils. They take appendixes. I think it's unusual that someone would want a foot, but it's within their rights because it's theirs."
After a friend picked up the bucket at a hardware store, Rubottom added several objects as well as the severed foot including a porcelain horse and can of beer to make what he called "a collage of myself." He also cut off two of the toes, saying he was considering giving them to friends.

SAN FRANCISCO - A San Francisco man who says he was devastated after he was identified as gay on a national Spanish-language radio show will be paid $270,000 by Univision Radio, an arbitrator has ruled.
Roberto Hernandez, 45, was driving to work in 2002 when he received a phone call from a man who said that he met Hernandez at a San Francisco gay bar. The caller then announced that the conversation was being broadcast live on the "Raul Brindis and Pepito Show," based in Houston.
Hernandez worked for the local station that broadcast the show, and sold advertising for the program. He said he was so depressed by the incident that he could no longer work.
"It's a nightmare," Hernandez said. "How do you live with such an embarrassment in your life? How do you live when someone makes your life so insignificant? "
Hernandez had been discreet about disclosing his sexual orientation before the incident, not even telling his family.

This right here is some straight up mess!!!!
Woman gets cable bill with derogatory name
August 17, 2005
CHICAGO --LaChania Govan said she got bounced around by her cable company when she called to complain. She made dozens of calls and was even transferred to a person who spoke Spanish -- a language she doesn't understand.
But when she got her August bill from Comcast she had no trouble understanding she'd made somebody mad. It was addressed to "B!!ch Dog."
"I was like you got to be freaking kidding me," said Govan, 25. "I was so mad I couldn't even cuss."
Govan said the only thing she did to Comcast employees that might be considered rude came after a few dozen calls when she felt she was treated shabbily. "I did tell them, 'You know what, it has to be a qualification to work for your company that you have to be rude,'" she said.
Govan said she talked to a supervisor and he offered her two months free service, which she turned down.
Finally Wednesday, about two weeks after she got her bill, somebody from the company left a message on her answering machine in which the caller apologized.
Comcast officials said it shouldn't have happened.
"We only use the actual customers names on the bill," said Patricia Andrews-Keenan, a Comcast spokeswoman.
Company officials went through the records and identified two people who were involved with the name change and fired them, Andrews-Keenan said. It's unknown why the employees did it.
In another case, Peoples Energy customer Jefferoy Barnes started getting letters addressed to "Jeffery Scr!!!m Bag Barnes."
"I had no bad words at all. I guess the earliest letter is dated in May and from then on up until now my name has been listed as Jeffery Scrotum Bag Barnes and I have no idea why."
Barnes said he received an apologetic call from a company official. He also has contacted an attorney to determine if he can take legal action.
A Peoples Energy spokeswoman called the letter inexcusable.

I'm telling you - as a former customer service employee, I saw this all the time. People would call in and tick someone off and they'd do all kinds of things like - change the name on accts, change passwords & delete ssn #s (making it impossible to call in about your acct - you had to show id at a store), write rude people's home numbers down and prank call them, screw up someone's acct - making the bill excessively high....
When you're dealing with people in customer service, you just never know who hasn't had their prozac today & will snap.
The moral of the story: Be nice to your customer service rep. And if they're awful - politely ask to speak to a supervisor to tell them "how great they are".

Pissy Postal Worker
Postal Worker Charged in Coffee Urine Case
Thu Aug 25,10:45 PM ET
AKRON, Ohio - A postal worker has been charged with putting urine in the coffee of co-workers who set up a video camera in their break room after they became suspicious, authorities said.
Thomas Shaheen, 49, of suburban Springfield Township, who works as a vehicle mechanic for the U.S. Postal Service, was charged Aug. 5 with two misdemeanor counts of adulteration of food or placing harmful objects in food.
He was ordered to appear in Akron Municipal Court on Monday.
Prosecutors said workers believed Shaheen poured urine into a coffee pot in a break room on July 5 and again July 6. Suspecting a problem, workers started their own investigation.
"Employees did put a video camera in, and that's how they were able to put a stop to what he was doing," Akron Prosecutor Douglas Powley said.
Powley said Shaheen was unhappy at work but the prosecutor declined to get into any further details.
None of Shaheen's co-workers was physically harmed.
Shaheen could not be reached for comment. Repeated calls to his home went unanswered Thursday. A message was left for his attorney, Paul F. Adamson.
Shaheen has been a postal employee for 11 years, said David Van Allen, a postal service spokesman.

Student Accused of Hot Iron Attack
Date: Thursday, August 25, 2005
By: Associated Press
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (AP) - A college freshman was charged with assault after authorities say she beat her new roommate with a hot clothes iron, hitting her so hard she fractured the young woman's skull and broke the iron into pieces.
The 18-year-old victim told authorities Sharronda Barkley, also 18, attacked her on their second day of classes after accusing her of putting a hidden camera in their room.
Heather Haase suffered a skull fracture, bruises, cuts and a burn on her arm in the Tuesday morning attack, university police said.
Barkley told officers Haase injured herself when she fell out of bed and hit the iron, according to a police report. Barkley was being held on $25,000 bond Thursday. A judge ordered her not to return to Bowling Green State University or have contact with Haase.
Freshmen arrived last week at the university, 20 miles south of Toledo. Haase and Barkley are both from small towns in Ohio.
"You have two young ladies that go off to college with an expectation of obtaining an education and hopefully having a good time, and they're not here a week and one of them is severely injured and the other ends up in jail," University Police Chief James Wiegand said. "That's not the way it's supposed to go."

MONTREAL - Sentencing arguments will begin in November for a woman who followed in the footsteps of Lorena Bobbitt, the Virginia woman who gained infamy in 1993 for slicing off her husband's penis.
Andree Rene's weapon of choice was fondue fuel.
Following an argument in April, 2001, the woman set her boyfriend's penis on fire as he slept.
The 52-year-old man suffered third-degree burns in the pelvic area and on his chest. He spent a month in hospital.
Rene was found guilty of aggravated assault last year.
Sentencing arguments begin Nov. 21.
It's not clear why so much time elapsed between conviction and sentencing.
The maximum sentence is 14 years in prison.
The Crown attorney said he will ask for a jail term, but wouldn't elaborate on how many years in prison he will seek.
Rene remains free on bail until sentencing.
Legal analyst Steven Slimovitch said Rene could avoid a jail sentence, unless she acted with premeditation

Mom Jailed Because Of Son's Rotten Teeth
Woman Thought Teeth Would Just Fall Out
POSTED: 8:16 am EDT September 14, 2006
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- A Pennsylvania mother is behind bars because, police said, her son's lack of dental care was her fault.
Survey: Poor Dental Care: Abuse?
According to a local dentist, the 5-year-old boy has just eight teeth left and will need to be on a special soft food diet. The dentist said the child's tooth decay was so severe, it was criminal, and police agreed.
Dr. Nicholas Prusack said the nerves are exposed in several places.
"This is the X-ray showing the rotted teeth of the 5 year-old victim, and 12 of them so infected they had to be pulled," Prusack said.
Investigators said the damage was the result of the boy having never seen a dentist.
Now, his mother, 43-year-old Erneida Resto of Bethlehem, Pa., is charged with endangering her son's welfare.
Northampton County, Pa., children and youth services began investigating Resto in February when she took her son to a dental office in Salisbury Towsnhip, Pa.
That is where Prusack performed the surgery, saying the boy was in so much pain he could not eat.
"It is probably one of the worst cases," Prusack said.
Prusack was so concerned that he notified authorities, who said the boy had been complaining of headaches and pain in his mouth since the summer of 2005.
According to court documents, his mother said she knew her son was hurting, but did not take him to a dentist because she figured his baby teeth would fall out and the problem would fix itself.
Prusack said if he hadn't removed the boy's teeth he would likely have ended up in the hospital within six months.
He said the boy is now left with only six teeth on the bottom and two teeth on top and has a long road ahead.
"He's not going to have all of his permanent teeth, and for the next 10 years chewing food will be a problem for him," Prusack said.
Restohas been sent to Northampton County Prison under $25,000 bail. A preliminary hearing was set for Sept. 22.
The boy is now in foster care, officials said.
