A little off topic, but a statistic I hear was that only 10% of Americans hold passports...

Because of TEH MOONSHINE.
I don't find what the student did offensive to me as a white person. A stupid costume yes, offensive no. Why don't I find it offensive? Well, there's no reason for it to BE offensive to me, no historical connection that makes it smack of racism.
As for the whole "slavery was a long time ago" and the seemingly "get over it" attitude in some posts....Senruset makes a key point - slavery is responsible in a large part for building the United States. When your country is built on that, I don't think it's something you can expect everyone will be all happy and forget about a hundred years later. I don't think it's something you SHOULD forget about and get over. I don't recall white folks being marginalized in US history like African Americans, Natives and other ethnic groups have been. So for white folks to tell African Americans to "get over it" shows how things haven't really changed much in a hundred years. We (white folk) are still in a more powerful position in society than those who are non-white, and to deny it is ignorant about the society we live in.
Yes, slavery existed elsewhere and still exists in the world. But we aren't talking about the world here, we are talking about the USA and its history and you can't compare one country and its slave history with anothers, they just won't be the same experiences.

This brings me to ask this question: Why aren't Irish-Americans all that upset with Notre Dame's mascot? He's kind of stereotypical and the Irish were a marginalized group until recently.

MoonShine, no ariesrising it is not! It is just frome being tired and dealing with inepitudale people who do not have the ability to ask for what they want because they just point at the picture of the package.
Point, hell, I have many items that are next each other!
I am not a friggen mind reader.
Oh on and on, for stupidity is not my time line!

In part because it's very much _their_ university and _their_ choice to use the mascot. It's not something that non-Irish people created to make fun of them.
Kind of like it's fine to talk about how fat your own mom is, but telling somebody else that their mom's fat is rightfully considerered obnoxious and rude.

I think any search of the internet will reveal websites that explicitly detail and even have video and audio of bondage between these groups.
Oops, wrong type of bondage. My bad.

Maybe I’m just a misinformed, unsympathetic Southern white girl, but it seems like minority groups (not exclusively African-Americans) rightfully demand equal rights. My problems come the same people feel that they can bypass rules because they are a minority. I am truly sorry that minorities (especially African-Americans) have been treated so poorly in the past, but the only way to get past this racism is for everyone to leave it alone. This means minorities cannot demand special treatment and they cannot scream racism whenever something bad happens to them.
But hey, that’s just how I feel.

Those are my sentiments exactly, and this is coming from someone who is only 1/4 (or possibly less) white. I'm sure that in this case, the guy who did the whiteface will be punished a lot less than the original offenders.

1 - Wrong. There were only slaves in the agricultural southern states. The northern states had a capitalist economy
2 - Wrong. I didn't hear it mentioned in the recent campaign. If you can cite any law in any jurisdiction keeping minorities down, please post such.
3 - Wrong. (Altho it may be true as long as the poverty and racism pimps like Jesse, Al, and the King clan find it financially advantageous to promote victimism.) If Bill Cosby's message could get out, who knows how much progress could be achieved quickly.
