Advising
To work with a chapter or be an advisor, do you have to be an initiated member of the GLO? If not, do you contact that group's HQ or the chapter to let them know you're interested?

It depends. I know that there is a group where you don't need to be an initiated member (I forget which one, heard about it in 2000) but you do for Gamma Phi.

I know that several GLOs will allow a non-initiate to be a chapter advisor. A lot of the time, that's how you get AIs - from non-initiates who have shown a tremendous amount of dedication to that particular GLO.

Not only do our advisors not necessarily have to be initiated members, they don't even have to be female. It's rare but we have had men as chapter advisors - and they have been quite successful... a few years ago, our Chapter Advisor of the Year Award went to a fraternity man that was one of our chapter's advisor. Female or male, if they are not initiated, there are certain activities they cannot attend - understandably.
It's much more important that chapters have a good advisor. If the best person for the job happens to not be a member, we don't want the chapter to miss out on the value that person can bring.
It is not the norm, but non-member advisors are allowable for us.

Our chapter advisors must be initiated members but our faculty advisors do not - but, of course, they have to be college/university faculty.

Many times and I can only speak for LXA, We recommend a Faulcaty Type person.
If they show a concertated effort, then they are put through Initiation if they so desire. Few are offered and none turn it down. They become valued Members of The Local Chapter.

We've had male advisors, so obviously you don't need to be an initiated sister. Many of our chapters are 1) at colleges where there is nothing in the town but the college - so unless you're a prof there aren't a lot of college grads living there, and 2) many of these colleges require the main advisor to be a faculty member. So if we held ourselves to initiated sisters only, we would be SOL.
Obviously they cannot attend rush or ritual if they're not sisters.

33girl to true.
Sometimes it is better to have a different gender as an advisor.
While House Mothers at Fraternitys were not advisors or could attend certain functions, they still a lot more for Mens Greek Organizations than most people realize. Hey guys when you go out, how to dress, how to treat a date.
Maybe the same thing could be said for Male advisors and Female Greek Orgaizations. How to dress and act.
Classes and GPA are not the only things that one should learn when graduating from College. Social graces can be a major factor in the Real world.

I am an AOII, but am serving as the faculty adviser for the AST colony where I am on faculty.
I advised an AOII chapter at another university for 7 years prior to that, and am still involved with AOII at the international level.
