The one episode last season where it was a group of about 8 kids living in a Livermore, CA home and their parents had died earlier that year: My cousins and aunt and uncle live really close to where that house is. They said it REALLY stands out from the rest of the neighborhood because it was so modern compared to everyone else. But that show drew crowds in that little neighborhood. I still have yet to see it in person but my mom has as well as some other members of the family.
I love the show... but always forget when it's on.

I think they said that she'd been ill and it somehow turned into an infection, and that infection is what killed her?

They thought it was the flu but turned out she had some sort of infection.

If I'm not mistaken she went into the hospital for the flu and then developed an infection from the flu and then died.
Sad story.
Rudey, why do you think he was a bad father?

Why? Because I see things for what they are sometimes.
Father:
Coached basketball
Job
Church
Family
Problem:
Family and house neglected.
Solution:
Build big house with gymnasium and high grade luxury products used often.
You know what I would have done? I would have solved the problem instead.

In some places they call it neglect. On this show, it's celebrated.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that cries at this show! I was sitting on my couch watching it Sunday night, thinking I'm crazy because I'm crying over a home makeover show.
The one with the bone marrow is the worst for making me cry!

While I LOVE the show, I have to agree (and do) somewhat with Rudey.
Personally, I would never have 8 children unless I can afford it. Obviously he couldn't or he would have hired someone to fix the problems of his house. And, it said the wife stayed home so I assume that her death did not take away an extra paycheck.
While I find it wonderful he goes to church, that he loved/adored hiw wife, loves his children, coaches their teams, etc. I do believe that living in a house that was in that condition is a form of neglect.
I also feel (though I know it's off topic) that even if you are completely wealthy, why have so many kids?
I love the show, I love that they do such a beautiful job. But I feel that that family put themselves in that situation by spreading their resources so thin.
Tragic about the wife though.

Exactly.
So instead of taking care of his kids and home, he coaches and goes to church a lot.
So instead of being able to have enough kids that you can take care of, he has 8.
And instead of dealing with these two problems, they give them a HUGE home with a gym. Who the heck has a 2 floor gym with indoor basketball court??
But then again, people should see this show for what it is...a form of entertainment. It has nothing to do with charity and fixing these kinds of problems.

That's so the truth.
We missed the first part of the show. How was the house in neglect? All I got from the latter part of the show was that it was too small for the family, but it sound from posts here like there was more to it than that.
I'm not going to get on the dad for the church-going or coaching his kid's teams -- lots of parents (me included) would say those activities are part of being a good parent. Of course, things at home shouldn't be neglected in the process. But his kids definitely seemed to think he's a good father, and they appeared to be fairly smart kids. I'm going to assume they know more about the situation than I do, and I'm not going to second guess them.
What I'm waiting for is the Extreme Makover Home Addition does Habitat for Humanity.

has anyone else noticed that when the the crew surprises the family early in the moring with the air horn that they family comes out all dressed up with full makeup and hair done? i wonder if the family already knew about the "surprise." if they came to wake me up at 7 or 8 in the morning, i would still be in my underwear and walk out in it
