The African group was the one to nominate Sudan. It is the African group that I find to be the biggest idiots of all. They nominated Sudan, Kenya, Togo, and Guinea. Aside from Kenya, the other 3 massacre their own citizens.
The appointment of Sudan is the biggest outrage. The whole council is a sham from the appointment of Libya to the appointment of Cuba.

For being the smallest continent, I think it's interesting that Europe is split into east and west, effectively giving Europe two seats.
It also shows, in my opinion, the supremacist thinking of western Europe.

How come African-Americans are not as informed or active in regards to the Sudanese ethnic cleansing?
I don't understand this.

For the same reason the UN isn't interested, because it is neither a war between races nor a war between states. Instead, it is a civil war not very different from those fought in Algeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, etc.

So America should only care about Black Africans when Arabs are involved, eh?
Why should we put the spotlight on ONE country in Africa when so many of its neighbors are dying as well; from civil war, clan-genocide, border wars, hunger, disease, paying off DEBT from our old colonization days.
hmmm...something to think about!

I think the point is that America doesn't care, and would care less if it knew that the "Arabs" involved were black too. You may have noticed that they are never shown on television.

It is barely on one country, just on one small region of N. Sudan.

It depends on the scale of the problem at hand. The spotlight shines on the big disaster of the moment. How many Americans remember the tsunami?
The problem is that Africa is absolutely huge and the politics are so complex that we may never fix post-colonial issues. We should certainly keep trying-we screwed it up back then and are continuing to screw with it now by raping African countries in the global market.
Fixing Africa means going to each separate country and working through a diplomatic nightmare, stabilizing the government and economy and ensuring that it will not implode again once we leave. Cancelling African debt would a HUGE start. Right now they're just paying the interest each year and barely making that. There is no dent in the debt and there never will be.

Wait - "we" here refers to many 'Western' nations, and not just the United States, right?

It has to do with post-WWII Soviet occupation. 50 years of Communist imperial rule will have an effect on your culture.

African countries where federalism has worked to drastically reduce tribal/ethnic conflict:
Nigeria
South Africa
Ethiopia
I think that a similar structure would end hostilites in the Sudan, as well as Israel.

They're a Federal Republic.
Republican doesn't mean Pat Robertson/big business alliance.
